Every spring, there’s a Best of SNO story that really stays with us.
“Always Learning” is one of them.

38 student journalists documented the journey and legacy of a beloved educator after her ALS diagnosis — with depth, care, and respect.
Worth the read.

Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Minneapolis (Official Audio)
YouTube video by Bruce Springsteen
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

This is an old neighbor of mine. If you’re wondering what it feels like for someone not on the front lines, just trying to get by and not pull the covers over your head, here you go.

We’ve just blocked AI-training crawlers across all SNO sites using our Cloudflare name servers, and the results are already noticeable. Server load has dropped by roughly 20–30%, which means faster, more stable websites. This move also protects your content from being scraped for model training.

Editorial: Cell phone policies aren’t for the better
Texas House Bill 1481, which keeps students from using personal communication devices on school property during the school day, has sparked significant debate – especially with students and guardians....
Reminder that SNO now requires captions and attributions for any images, graphics, drawings, etc. included in @bestofsno.bsky.social submissions. This piece from ENO offers a great example of captions that make graphics more accessible to those w/screen readers: eaglenationonline.com/70063/showca...

Reminder: We've updated @bestofsno.bsky.social guidelines this year and now require a caption AND attribution for any images, graphics, drawings, etc. used in the story. Make sure to double check that you have those so your story is eligible for publication!

Schools closed when these students were in 8th grade. Their 12th grade NAEP scores aren’t pretty.
In National Assessment of Educational Progress tests administered in early 2024, high school seniors posted historically low math and reading scores.
Studies show students who work at a school news publication score HIGHER on English, math, social studies and science. But student news publications have been declining nationally. Maybe an investment in scholastic journalism could help reverse this trend?

Millions of followers ≠ engagement. @theguardian.com has 1.4m followers on Threads with almost no engagement. On Bluesky, links can get 3–4x more clicks than likes.
The real question isn’t “how many followers do you have?” but “what kind of engagement do you get?”

But pivoting to AI is not a business strategy. Telling journalists they must use AI is not a business strategy. Partnering with AI companies is a business move, but becoming reliant on revenue from tech giants who are creating a machine that duplicates the work you’ve already created is not a smart or sustainable business move, and therefore it is not a smart business strategy. It is true that AI is changing the internet and is threatening journalists and media outlets. But the only AI-related business strategy that makes any sense whatsoever is one where media companies and journalists go to great pains to show their audiences that they are human beings, and that the work they are doing is worth supporting because it is human work that is vital to their audiences.
Found this @jasonkoebler.bsky.social story about why AI isn’t a viable business model for journalism to be extremely well done and oddly hopeful

Purdue, IU abandon student newspapers, diminishing campus voices | Opinion
Purdue ended paper distribution and parking passes for Exponent staff. IU rejected student-approved funding for the Indiana Daily Student.
"Student journalists keep college students informed. Unfortunately, universities are distancing themselves from student newspapers, exacerbating the challenges young people face in finding trustworthy information." https://loom.ly/rObXh38

Misspellings happen, there but for the grace, and so on. But I think people who write down people’s names sometimes underestimate how much people really do not like it when you misspell their names. We’ve all done it! But it’s not like a typo. It’s a factual error. People don’t like it!
