I can officially confirm that the snow in NC is roughly one (1) corgi deep

Dr. Gladys West, the pioneering mathematician whose work laid the foundation for modern GPS technology, has died. She was 95.
As somebody who benefited from Aid to Families with Dependent Children, I have been hit hard by the cut in SNAP benefits.
Our country makes it a shameful thing to be poor, which its own cruelty.
I'm sharing this guide for food resources by state:

And for those with resources, donating directly to Feeding America can help. They work with local food bank partners, often can buy at bulk, discount prices, and have employer match programs

New: More than $50 billion (yes, with a b) for education is in jeopardy if the Education Department eventually proceeds with the layoffs it implemented last Friday. A federal judge put them on hold as of Wednesday.

I also cannot help but think of Oklahoma as Indian country & this as another attempt at pushing white colonial narratives on native kids.
My PhD student @leonielorenz.bsky.social (with Eva Geissen) has made this nice (free) online course to introduce mathematical modelling for biology:

Including both molecular and epidemiological examples
Ph.D. students Devan Mackenzie and Hajra Fayyaz plus @dyong.bsky.social and I have a new chapter out. We worked with a group of teachers to work out what culturally sustaining pedagogies might look like in math and computer science classrooms www.igi-global.com/book/cultura...

The value of 0β° seems like a plot hole.

This is a 4-year project. Participation will involve: interviews, classroom observations, co-design of curricula, and may include video-recording lessons and participation in video clubs.
βParticipants will receive a $2,000 stipend each year.β

We would like to invite you to participate in a research study to better understand how we can co-design, analyze, and improve instruction that leverages multilingual studentsβ languages.
If you send me an email (smarsha3[at]ncsu.edu), I can send you a scanned copy!

Members of my research lab and I wrote Chapter 64, titled, "Meaningful Teacher Professional Development: A Learning Sciences Perspective"
co-authors: @samanthamarshall.bsky.social, Grace A. Chen, Nadav Ehrenfeld, @brettegarner.bsky.social, @larajasien.bsky.social, Elizabeth Metts & Katherine S-M
Oh man, I'm sad that I'll miss you!! I ended up cancelling just because I have too much travel this summer
If you want to read more, here is the link to the chapter on @researchgate.bsky.social:

Our argument:
βΎ Most research summarizing high quality PD proposes lists of features of quality PD
βΎ BUT, while there is a general consensus, there are points of contention. What is more, there are examples of PD that meet the criteria set out on the lists but don't support meaningful learning
i didn't make it to #AERA2025 this year, but see that photo (top right) of the person signing what looks like a phone book?
that is the publication celebration for the new Handbook on Educational Policy!
π§ͺπͺI know folks are struggling to appeal #NSF grant terminations
I created a generic GD version of our team's response plan, including a draft appeal*, based on compiled guidance.

A word cloud, with words of different sizes, and different colors, with purple for the largest, red medium, and green small. "Black" stands out prominently in purple. In red, we see "climate", "student", "network", "justice", "identity", "teacher", and "undergraduate".
Who bears the brunt of these cuts? Well, here's a word cloud of the most frequent terms from the titles and abstracts of terminated grants, with word size proportional to frequency:
This is your periodic reminder: NSF's Directorate for STEM Education (EDU) *still* remains paused in new awards.
Here's an updated graph. But also see below thread about why the nation needs these #STEMed investments, including for sustaining the *future* of scientific research.
Thank you! I didn't know this existed!
