I am in a medical adjacent field professionally tho, I guess most reference are just from what you see. An additional object to a living body inherently result in inflammation, commonly seen as oedema and examthema. Scar tissue result in slight retraction at wound edge most of the time.
I freestyle the wounds and attachments, with reference to my own design page. I do personally have a penchant to do dual attachment on either side of the face because I do not like drawing ears.
