This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024β25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.
This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

US higher education was a crown jewel, generating knowledge, wealth, prestige, and power unrivaled by anyone.
And the US is throwing it away, because Americans elected a govt ideologically opposed to truth, science, merit, and racial/gender equality, preferring to weaken the country to reduce that.
Congratulations to all the bankers, hedge-fund managers, private-equity honchos, tech titans, corporate executives and op-ed writers for backing the man who will do more to undermine the system that made them insanely wealthy than any other presidential candidate in their lifetimes.
Timezones are so weird. Australia is in 2026, Canada is in 2025, and the United States is in 1939.

As we mourn Rob Reiner, donβt skip this: he was, pretty much, personally responsible for overturning Californiaβs Prop 8 banning same sex marriage.

The underwater seismometer network is so great, as evidenced from yesterday's EQ off-Tohoku.

Missing a verb between "she" and "the". Just out of curiosity, is there a reason these aren't addressed in the first printing? (Tried to message you but your profile was greyed out.)
@rickperlstein.bsky.social Dude, my husband loves your books but he wanted me to pass along that the typographical errors are extremely distracting. If you want someone to proofread your next book please be in touch.
Apparently these are the last decade or two of revisions to the jobs report. If these are correct, it looks like the period I'm recalling was early in Biden's tenure (2021).
Star Wars Intro Scroll Episode IV It Was All So Stupid Seriously, you would not believe how stupid it was. Every day, unrelentingly, just the dumbest stuff by the absolute worst people. And what made it worse was knowing that weβd brought this on ourselves.
It's even worse than that...my recollection is the during the Biden years the jobs report numbers were routinely adjusted upward (by a lot). So he got little credit when the reports came out, and hardly anyone noticed when the reports were revised months later.

Donald Trump gives people permission to be their worst selves. His politics are not just representative, they are generative. His words seep into peopleβs souls and slowly corrode whatever potential for human decency ever resided there.
Japan has managed a huge accomplishment: fully covering the offshore parts of their subduction zones, which generate massive earthquakes and tsunamis, with more than 200 fiber-connected geophysical stations -- at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.
Nothing else in the world can compare.
