Absolutely horrifying report on an 80 year old man who was used as a human shield by Israeli soldiers. After eight hours, he and his wife were sent off by the soldiers only to be shot dead by other soldiers.

Instead we seem to be left with these ever narrowing circles of who is deemed morally virtuous enough to converse with, based on working backwards from a predetermined outcome.
Yes, but that would require a concerted effort to talk to instead of past each other. It would require everyone to get more comfortable with uncomfortable convos. You know, all the things that actually mark intra-group solidarity.
Only about 300 to 400 people a year give a kidney to someone they never met. It's an act of generosity so unusual, a neuroscientist studies the people who do this.
I could write a 100 posts on things in the Pro-Palestine Discourse that I find annoying and worse. But these things are almost never important enough to be a priority. The priority is saving lives. The priority is stopping this catastrophe before it gets even worse.

Israel severely weakened safeguards for protecting civilians; adopted flawed methods to assess risk of civilian casualties; "routinely" failed to conduct post-strike reviews of civilian harm; and ignored warnings about these failings, the @nytimes.com found.

This isn’t support for the (just) Palestinian cause. It’s ethnic and national discrimination.
If the facts as reported are correct, this is about as far as you can get from the organisation’s mission of promoting ‘social justice, civil and human rights’. I have nothing but contempt for those requiring a litmus test of 7 Oct as ‘legitimate resistance’. m.youtube.com/watch?si=yeN...
SBS Examines has confirmed the that $50 notes marked with antisemitic graffiti were indeed dispensed from a service station ATM in Bondi: sbs.com.au/language/eng....
I had honestly thought this was an elaborate hoax.
Honestly, this just strikes me as knee jerk with a huge potential for discriminatory policing. I would support a small exclusion zone around places of worship akin to termination clinics but requiring a ‘social cohesion pledge’ for multicultural orgs??? www.abc.net.au/news/2024-12...?
Article titled Who Benefits from an Attack on the Synagogue in Melbourne
Good news. It was Mossad that firebombed a Melbourne synagogue so no one needs to worry about antisemitism in Australia
This is in a heavily Jewish area of sydney. Enough! Australian Jews are not a proxy for the actions of the Israeli government!
Newspaper article reporting Peter Dutton seeking to deport ‘antisemitic’ visa holders
Indeed. I have seen many ludicrous takes on the firebombing in the last couple of days (incl the standard antisemitic conspiracy theories). Netanyahu’s comments win ‘most cynical’. Though Opposition Leaders’ call to link response with deportation of visa holders a close runner up.
BTW I really, really mean this, it's one of my longest held political beliefs - as a teen I (1) had never heard of the Nakba and (2) believed the Israeli narrative re 1948 of fending off annihilative attacks from all sides - but like my father, who thought the same, raised me to think:
Bleurgh. Between this and Netanyahu’s suggestion that the attack would somehow have been prevented by Aust not voting in the UN to support a 2SS…

I’m not really into the ‘we’re living in 1930s Germany’ rhetoric. But also, inter generational trauma is real and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling it.
Melbourne, a man yields a hammer at a kosher bakery the same day synagogue fire bombed.

Mammal to mammal transmission of #H5N1. I think the question for human to human is not if but when.

“Today, no one minds whether they are Christians or Jews and there is no antipathy between Jews and Gentiles as there is in the Slavonic East. A repetition of today’s Russian attitude would not have happened even in the Middle Ages.”
Written in 1907 in a book about the Jewish Community in Frankfurt
Two members of the Adass Israel congregation were inside at the time of the arson preparing for morning prayers. Also worth noting, this is a highly orthodox (and traditionally non-Zionist) community.
Works well for smh articles. Hit and miss for other Australian newspapers.
You can put the url into 12ft.io and it should work
When Nazi Germany invaded Denmark in World War II, the Hungarian chemist George de Hevesy dissolved the gold Nobel Prizes of Max von Laue and James Franck in aqua regia to prevent the Nazis from stealing them. He placed the resulting solution on a shelf in his laboratory at the Niels Bohr Institute. After the war, he returned to find the solution undisturbed and precipitated the gold out of the acid. The Nobel Society then recast the Nobel Prizes using the original gold.
Well, there’s a story.
This disaster in Samoa was worsened by vaccine disinformation fuelled by an eager RFKjr. I dread to think what harm he can do next 🧪
Alfred Dreyfus was a captain in the French army, and was convicted of treason for passing military secrets to Germany. The thing that made this so notable was that he didn't do it. Not at all. The acts were indeed committed, but not by Dreyfus; he was falsely accused of someone else's crime. It was NOT the case that Dreyfus passed military secrets to Germany, but had a really good reason for doing so (and the authorities were ignoring this important context). It was NOT the case that Dreyfus passed military secrets to Germany, but was being unfairly singled out when others who committed similar acts were walking free. He didn't do it at all. Anyone who wants to make analogies to the Dreyfus affair should keep these characteristics in mind.
A friend who is a descendant-ish of the actual Alfred Dreyfus posted this, am sharing the part I'm allowed to share with permission.
