Last night's peaceful protest outside Ormskirk's Council Offices against Labour's attempts to close down the swimming baths at Ormskirk and Skelmersdale. The combined votes of Our West Lancashire, Conservatives and Independents means that the baths stay open and public can still use the amenities.

Shortly after Wigan equalise, Fulham go up the other end and restore their lead. This is a very good cup game which has exploded into life.
Today marks the first integrated settlement for Greater Manchester and the West Midlands, a landmark moment in our ambitious devolution agenda to empower local leaders and bring decision making closer to communities.

Attended an excellent Kevin McPhillips Memorial Lecture organised by the Manchester branch of the Historical Association, delivered by Emeritus Professor, Keith Laybourn titled, 'Who Killed Cock Robin?' The Rise and Fall of the First Labour Government in Britain, 1924.

Merry Christmas and all best wishes for the festive season. Cheers.๐๐ โ๏ธ๐๐
One could not agree more David and big is never always better. A huge concern about Lancashire devolution is that there is already a gulf between its CC and boroughs such as West Lancs when it comes to highways and planning matters. This could get worse if the CA reforms go through.

We went to pay our respects and celebrate the life of this wonderful man, John Shepherd who was a great friend, amazing colleague and brilliant academic. It was a very nice service, for such a really fine person indeed.๐

A major take home point from the Annual Heseltine Inst. Lecture featuring the Mayors of Liverpool and Greater Manchester is that whilst they have a sense of mission in terms of devolution and development of place, it must be matched by a shared vision from Central government which is sadly lacking.
Wonder what the current Mayor of Greater Manchester's thoughts are about Regional Assemblies holding Mayors to account, as once envisaged by Prescott in his early-1980s Power to Regions proposals? Not sure the mayor would like this check on his powers.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester says that the rapid economic growth of the Greater Manchester city region is outstripping its infrastructure. This begs the question as to whether there is now a danger that some city regions are becoming ungovernable like London.
Would a Greater Manchester Tourist Tax work in Wigan or Oldham or if introduced, should this purely be restricted to Manchester City Centre? Discuss...
When thinking about John Prescott, this vision of his beer drinking exploits always springs to mind. During undergraduate student days at Huddersfield, a group of us who drank at Milton Hall and the Rat and Ratchet back in the day tried to copy this! Rest in Peace.๐

Quite funny you should post a picture of Victor Meldrew Glen. Only yesterday in Manchester, I saw a bloke who looked just like him and was basically a doppelganger. Wanted to go up and say to him, 'I don't belieeeeve it!' ๐๐
Rest in Peace John Prescott who was a fine seafarer; formidable trade unionist; a Titan of the Labour movement and moderniser. As Deputy Leader, he was the glue between Old and New Labour; a brilliant communicator; environmentalist; supporter of regional governance and retrofitted 1.5m homes.๐
