All I want for Christmas is the SMH to do itsย job Content warning for road violence and credulous reporting. Yesterday, a person died near Central after being hit by a garbage truck. They were on a speed-limited e-bike at the time, which prompted an awful lot of media outlets to play the hits and blame kids on e-motorbikes for, as a reminder, this approx 13 tonne garbage truck being driven into this person.

The ABC is wrong about e-bikesย (again) Real problems require real solutions. Note: this post discusses specific instances of road violence. In August, treasured national institution the ABC wrote a terrible article about the alarming rise in pedestrian deaths. The piece falsely attributed this trend to an increase in e-bike and e-scooter crashes, before the ABC edited the article and issued a welcome correction, which nonetheless failed to name the actual threat: cars.

Why wonโ€™t Transport for NSW share SCATS Traffic Signal Phasingย Data? In April 2025, WalkSydney worked with Jake Coppinger, and Sara Stace of Better Streets to request SCATS Traffic signal phasing data. This was an action following on ongoing discussions with the community in Sydney on the abysmal time allocated for people crossing on foot at traffic lights. Walkable density doneย well On 13 March 2025, Committee for Sydney collaborated with WalkSydney to produce a report: Putting our best foot forward: a checklist for walkable density. This is because walkability starts with how we build our precincts - the structure of places influences 54% of all walking. Since we can design our neighbourhoods to make it more likely for people to walk, but often the challenge and complexity can be overwhelming, the checklist reduces a vast body of research into what makes good walkable places into a simple 10 minute question-and-answer form, that includes providing diverse, higher-density housing like apartments and townhouses, along with good access to jobs, childcare and schools, parks, shops and public transport.

For all these not-rocket-science reasons, why has this Labor govt not simply put an end date to Scott Morrisonโ€™s juvenile tax rewards for buying trucks instead of small cars. Arguably the irony is they also do a crap job as tradie vehicles compared to previous kinds of actual utes.
