Britain's political apparatus has a culture of never learning from the lessons. This country needs parliamentary, electoral and legislative reforms. Part of that reform must see a clear separation between politics and the following, big business, finance, media, constabulary and judiciary.
You know, itβs just possible to feel really bad about the violent deaths of Israeli Jews, the genocide in Palestine and the deaths of Australian Jews all while being neither anti-Semitic or Islamophobic.
Somehow that has become impossible for the political class.

Real talk: if the environment is anything close to what yesterdayβs special election implies in November, there need to be people working very hard on a serious agenda for a substantial Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, focused on voting rights, democracy, and court reform.
Life under authoritarianism can feel normal, if you redefine normal, until dissent is silenced & fear takes hold. Routines continue, but freedoms erode. Only when people start disappearing, arrested without cause, taken in the night, or never heard from again, does the illusion of normalcy shatter.
