Ray Harryhausen was guest of honour at the 45th World Science Fiction Convention, 1987 held at Brighton, England. I told my brother I'd get his autograph. He scoffed at that. I did indeed meet the man, get his autograph (the other two are Arkady & Boris Strugatski) and a five minute chat to boot.
