The black mummified-looking fingers of Xylaria polymorpha emerge from a rotting log. This is one strange looking fungus which is commonly known as Deadman’s Fingers and seems well named to me!

The gloriously gothic Deadman’s Fingers, Xylaria polymorpha, bringing a slightly sinister atmosphere to Hob Hey Wood yesterday. If the folk that named the wood had seen these I can understand why they thought goblins resided here! 🧟‍♂️🍄📸
