At @therestpolitics.bsky.social in Dublin last night, they did a poll of the audience.

Which is the bigger threat to the world right now? China or America?

It was 96% America and 4% China.

I get the merits of doing a survey course to expose students to different subjects they might be interested in, but I think my intro bio class in college really missed the β€œwhy” and β€œhow” of science.

Science was presented as lists of truths about the world until like sophomore year.

I’m running a mentored volunteer research project and have been using it as a way to teach basic ecology, evolution, philosophy, research methods, professional skills, and practical data collection skills, all with reference to the project we’re doing.

Maybe this is what intro bio should be.

I hope someone makes a scrap book for Kristi Noem of all of the posts we made while we waited for someone to tell her she was fired.

It is so damning of US news media that so many outlets refuse to just straight up say that Senator Tim Sheehy assaulted an activist.

He did not "help" Capitol police. They did not need his help. He wanted to assault the guy and did. He should resign.

No head of state should be allowed to say β€œhello residents of <country>, please evacuate your home because we are planning to bomb you indiscriminately”

You know, pre-meditated murder and all that.

Tear it all down, remove these people from society, raze the data centers, and salt the ground. Let us never see this kind of depravity in our world.

Viruses in marine sediments: a review of their effect on biogeochemistry and microbial interactions | Applied and Environmental Microbiology In the ocean, viruses are known to mediate the carbon cycle, keeping dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the microbial loop and preventing its movement into secondary consumers (1). However, few direct ...

New paper out! We sat down and compiled all viral work in marine sediments. The water column has been getting a second look for viral interactions, its time for sediment to have the same!

It turns out that hiring a spoiled brat whose dad bailed him out of every bad situation he got himself into to run a country is going to cause absolute catastrophe. Who knew. Other than everyone with more than one brain cell.

Met someone who spent their career building programs to support underrepresented scientists at all career stages. We asked what he wished he knew earlier. He said he wished he knew how to make these programs sustainable, so that his life work didn't crumble with a change in leadership.

There are two wolves inside you. One will only eat while in your arms, and the other will not move an inch until you have exited the premises for at least an hour.

That’s actually two cats. And they’re inside my apartment.

I feel like it's almost too obvious a point, but we all heard plenty from fascists in the 1930s and 40s. They got to make the case to the whole world and you can't say they didn't get a fair hearing. Anyway, in the end we decided to destroy them.

β€œWe didn’t vote him in! He cheated!” - the US political system allowed for that man to win power either way. I’m sorry but American power monopoly has been a scourge on the world for a LONG time. A country that has been at war for most of its 250 years of existence is not innocent.

Trite but true: If you ever wondered how German’s reacted to the whittling away of rights for Jews, Roma, gays and lesbians . . . you’re watching it happen in real time.
