we talk about carcinization, but never about the many, many times plants have invented the βtree.β
Tree is not a kind of plant, it is a thing plats do, and they are by and large unrelated.

once again reminding everyone to funnel your emotions into organizing and building solidarity in your community and not pointless doomscrolling
To move forward with focus, we must first understand this simple fact: we are up against an ideology that has given up not only on the premise and promise of liberal democracy but on the livability of our shared world β on its beauty, on its people, on our children, on other species. The forces we are up against have made peace with mass death. They are treasonous to this world and its human and non-human inhabitants.
The key paragraph from @naomiaklein.bsky.social & @astra.bsky.social's powerful piece describing the urgency of our present moment. They are right, and we better move quickly.
In one four-day period in March 2025, engineers logged 205 maintenance calls. Sailors reported working up to 19-hour days to fix leaks and restore suction, with problems in a single head capable of disabling an entire section of the ship. Since 2023, the Navy has carried out at least 10 acid flushes, each costing about $400,000, though the procedure cannot be performed while the carrier is underway.
The sailors on the USS Gerald Ford who keep stuffing their t-shirts into the toilets so the bathrooms flood and the carrier canβt deploy to Iran should be awarded a collective Nobel Peace Prize
Such a cool story by @spicycloaca.bsky.social! I read it when the issue came out last month and Iβm still thinking about it when I look up at night πͺβοΈ
βThe picture that emerged was of a slow shift playing out beneath the surface of entire populations: a rise in cognitive problems, subtle declines in functional capacity, and lost independenceβ

hmmmmm
These LLM tools are an enemy to science, in the broadest and deepest sense. Scientists need to be resisting them at every turn, because whatever niche positive uses have been found in no way compensate the net assault on collective epistemic and cognitive stability

John Gai carried his sick father to a nearby clinic in a wheelbarrow, but he died from cholera on the way.
Gai then pushed the wheelbarrow for hours through the camp to take him to the cemetery: βNobody should have to carry a dead body among the living.β
Thanks Jim!!

This isnβt a departure, tech has always been against women. Facebook started as a woman-rating app

The opening spread of my story βHeavynessβ, illustrated with a a tired-looking woman lying on her back, a hand laid across her forehead, by Richard Wagner. The first paragraph of the story reads: 1. PREFATORY REMARKS - MY SISTER'S DEATH - OUR ENVIRONS On the Tuesday I collected my sister's ashes from the funeral directors on Lewes Road. That it was an ordinary Tuesday, overcast and constantly on the verge of rain, felt remarkable. It seemed that a change so immense in implication for my own affairs should somehow mark the world beyond it, as if Esther had borne a Royal title and grand formal displays of mourning ought to have interrupted the course of everyday life, That things should proceed as normal felt scandalous. Of course we were not royalty. We live - had lived - small and modest lives, bound together since infancy, Esther eight years older than I.
Gotta love the smell of print in the morning. Todayβs post brought issue 4 of REMAINS, with stories by @stevetoase.bsky.social, @kayv.bsky.social, the late James Sallis, and others, with art by Richard Wagner. Thanks to editor Andy Cox for finding space for my story of illness and loss.
