Voters approved an excise tax on cannabis. That approach resulted in the most successful law in the nation in terms of participation in the legal market.
When we increased the cannabis tax last year, I warned that this would not only destabilize a new and struggling legal cannabis market; but, also, that these new taxes would push buyers away, diminishing participation in the legal market and tax revenue along with it.

I was particularly excited to hear her highlight the literacy legislation we passed & how we must continue investing in kids to meet our literacy goals.

We also need to take the next steps. Literacy doesn't end with good 4th grade reading scores. We need to maintain the effort as kids get older and we need to continue pushing past decoding to help kids develop all of the skills necessary to be an expert reader.

Right now the Michigan House Oversight Committee is digging into the conditions at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility. This facility is plagued by terrible conditions, especially mold. The state needs to step up and treat the women in prison with dignity.

vaping should not come with additional, unnecessary hazards from faulty or cheap equipment. Essentially, what happens is that cheap vaping equipment is made with metals and insufficient coatings that allow heavy metals to leech into the vaping liquid.
My legislation simply requires equipment that prevents toxic metals from leeching into vape fluids and peoples' bodies. Unfortunately, many teens and adults vape recreationally despite public health efforts and the obvious dangers from inhaling. Still...
Michigan needs to step up to protect consumers against toxic vaping products.
That's why I introduced SB 786-788 that together would reduce the toxic metals that people sometimes inhale while using nicotine or cannabis vapes.
Unfortunately, we pay home-based caregivers such a low wage that these services aren't available to many people - pushing them into less desirable and more expensive nursing homes. We need to make sure that these services are avaliable. Whitmer's recommendation will make a huge, positive difference.
Second, I am very excited to see the Governor's recommendation to invest in the care of our elders. Michigan's population is aging and we have many elders who want to age-in-place where they will be happier, healthier, and less costly to care for.
I remain focused on two budget areas where I have been working to increase our investment: literacy and services for seniors.
I am pleased that Gov Whitmer has included a commitment to literacy in this recommendation, continuing to invest in science-of-reading training and literacy coaches.
