Would dedicated mental focus prevent us noticing an outrageous visual anomaly, even if we what we focused on wasn't strictly visual? Probably.
My student Malte Bieler and I followed this up a while later, asking participants to try to detect changes to displays of just 2-4 colored shapes while doing a quick tone judging task. Same outcome: even trying to remember a little bit of visual detail was impaired.

We asked participants to remember lists of 2-7 digits while trying to detect changes to patterns of colored squares. Trying to remember a 7-digit list (as opposed to just reciting a known 7-digit phone number) impaired change detection a lot.

Q&A after Dan Simon's @psychonomicsociety.bsky.social One World Seminar- Must attention capture be visual to miss the gorilla? I doubt it. Dan mentioned research about verbal memory impairing visual change detection. Sounds like my first work with @ncowan51.bsky.social! References in the threadπ€:
Exciting that Simons showcased Ding et alβs @jcgntn.bsky.social paper showing theoretically interesting null effects of familiarity on inattentional blindness in his @psychonomicsociety.bsky.social OneWorld seminar. Some null effects matter! Paper here: journalofcognition.org/articles/10....
Cardiff UCU Casework co-ordinator David Wood and I posing with a table full of Union propaganda and cheap plastic tat. Still love our Unionβs hot pink colour scheme. Gotta say.
Attended a Cardiff Uni βwellbeingβ event for @cardiffucu.bsky.social today.
Argued that the best way to improve staff wellbeing is to save jobs, improve pay & conditions, join a union, and become an active member.
Recruited well, had lots of great conversations, & actually listened to colleagues.

I understand why chatbot cheating happens but every time I read about it I want to gently remind everyone that the point of schoolwork is not for the submission to exist. Teachers are not just greedy for more essays or solved equations. The point is to do the work WITH YOUR OWN BRAIN, FOR LEARNING.

Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf mustβve thought before he died by suicide: βHe might have thought βhow is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over thisβ maybe he said βthis site was not subject to local zoning.ββ
a brown wire-haired pup stands on a wooden deck in a grassy yard. he looks at us with golden eyes and his right ear flipped inside out. he has a pipe-shaped stick in his mouth, giving him the appearance of a sophisticated and dapper gentleman. just give him a deerstalker cap and a cloak, and he'd give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.
This pup found a stick shaped like an old timey pipe earlier today and has already solved three mysteries. 13/10
AI does not magically infuse knowledge into people.
"We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery. On a quiz that covered concepts theyβd used just a few minutes before, participants in the AI group scored 17% lower than those who coded by hand"
I just created a series of seven deep-dive videos about AI, which I've posted to youtube and now here. π
Targeted to laypeople, they explore how LLMs work, what they can do, and what impacts they have on learning, well-being, disinformation, the workplace, the economy, and the environment.

are YOU a university professor, professor emeriti or associate professor of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, theology, and religion?
Did you know you can nominate people for the Nobel Peace Prize?
"I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace"
crazy to think how i struggle to ask for any kind of help but the president of the united states asks "can i have your nobel peace prize?"

Call each other out, even if someone tells you it's not polite or respectful.
Dear sir Keir, wishing you a very hopey Christmas. I wanted to wish you good luck with your relaunch in January. I heard you want to focus on three things. So here's my advice. Tax billionaires, cut bills, stop scapegoating migrants. Zack.
Dear Wes, wishing you a very hopey Christmas. When you're not measuring the curtains in downing street, our hopes for you are that you can finally reduce NHS waiting lists in 2026 and stop taking donations from private healthcare. Peace and love, Zack.
Dear Yvette, Christmas should surely be a time to think about peace - and the governments role in prosecuting those calling for it. Peace and love, Zack.
π Just getting my last Xmas cards out there.
