Matt Goodwin has been sent back to Substack. The Conservatives have lost their deposit. Keir Starmer has been told left wing voters are not a guarantee for Labour. Overall, British politics could do worse than follow Gorton and Denton.

Would dedicated mental focus prevent us noticing an outrageous visual anomaly, even if we what we focused on wasn't strictly visual? Probably.

Visual short-term memory always requires general attention - Psychonomic Bulletin & Review The role of attention in visual memory remains controversial; while some evidence has suggested that memory for binding between features demands no more attention than does memory for the same feature...

My student Malte Bieler and I followed this up a while later, asking participants to try to detect changes to displays of just 2-4 colored shapes while doing a quick tone judging task. Same outcome: even trying to remember a little bit of visual detail was impaired.

When visual and verbal memories compete: Evidence of cross-domain limits in working memory - Psychonomic Bulletin & Review Recently, investigators have suggested that visual working memory operates in a manner unaffected by the retention of verbal material. We question that conclusion on the basis of a simple dual-task ex...

We asked participants to remember lists of 2-7 digits while trying to detect changes to patterns of colored squares. Trying to remember a 7-digit list (as opposed to just reciting a known 7-digit phone number) impaired change detection a lot.

Q&A after Dan Simon's @psychonomicsociety.bsky.social One World Seminar- Must attention capture be visual to miss the gorilla? I doubt it. Dan mentioned research about verbal memory impairing visual change detection. Sounds like my first work with @ncowan51.bsky.social! References in the threadπŸ€“:

Are Familiar Objects More Likely to Be Noticed in an Inattentional Blindness Task? | Journal of Cognition

Exciting that Simons showcased Ding et al’s @jcgntn.bsky.social paper showing theoretically interesting null effects of familiarity on inattentional blindness in his @psychonomicsociety.bsky.social OneWorld seminar. Some null effects matter! Paper here: journalofcognition.org/articles/10....

Attended a Cardiff Uni β€œwellbeing” event for @cardiffucu.bsky.social today.
Argued that the best way to improve staff wellbeing is to save jobs, improve pay & conditions, join a union, and become an active member.
Recruited well, had lots of great conversations, & actually listened to colleagues.

I understand why chatbot cheating happens but every time I read about it I want to gently remind everyone that the point of schoolwork is not for the submission to exist. Teachers are not just greedy for more essays or solved equations. The point is to do the work WITH YOUR OWN BRAIN, FOR LEARNING.

Why are UK universities failing? - LSE Impact The HE sector in the UK faces the prospect of a university going into administration. How have universities fallen so low and is change possible?

Poor political decisions, a broken funding model, managerial leadership, and metric‑driven governance, which together are transforming the sector into something barely recognisable as a public university system by Constantinos Alexiou and George Saridakis

a brown wire-haired pup stands on a wooden deck in a grassy yard. he looks at us with golden eyes and his right ear flipped inside out. he has a pipe-shaped stick in his mouth, giving him the appearance of a sophisticated and dapper gentleman. just give him a deerstalker cap and a cloak, and he'd give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.

This pup found a stick shaped like an old timey pipe earlier today and has already solved three mysteries. 13/10

AI does not magically infuse knowledge into people.

"We found that using AI assistance led to a statistically significant decrease in mastery. On a quiz that covered concepts they’d used just a few minutes before, participants in the AI group scored 17% lower than those who coded by hand"

Targeted to laypeople, they explore how LLMs work, what they can do, and what impacts they have on learning, well-being, disinformation, the workplace, the economy, and the environment.

Dear Wes, wishing you a very hopey Christmas. When you're not measuring the curtains in downing street, our hopes for you are that you can finally reduce NHS waiting lists in 2026 and stop taking donations from private healthcare. Peace and love, Zack.

Dear Yvette, Christmas should surely be a time to think about peace - and the governments role in prosecuting those calling for it. Peace and love, Zack.
