This is the kind of journalist an editor yearns for at a time like this: A Persian-fluent reporter w/ deep experience covering Iranian politics and policies.
She used to work at the Washpost.
Then Bezos dismantled the international coverage.
Now sheβs at the NYT

Daryl Hannah: βWhen so many people watch a dramatization that uses a real name, real-life consequences follow. In the weeks since the series aired, I have received many hostile and even threatening messages from viewers who seem to believe the portrayal is factual.β
"Inspired by those volunteers seven decades ago, Wesleyan University and a network of hundreds of schools and allied organizations are uniting for Democracy Summer, a nationwide program to educate citizens and protect our elections in the coming year."

New Democracy Summer initiative led by Wesleyan President MIchael Roth. (As a longtime member of the Wesleyan family through marriage, I've been inspired to see the college doing so much to meet the moment.)
Important OpEd from Michael Roth. The demobilization of students has left a gaping hole in our democratic defenses. Michael is organizing to correct that. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/04/o...
There is/was a tradition at Wesleyan econ seminars to introduce speakers as trained at [PhD] and educated at [Undergrad].
Easy to be proud of where you were educated when the university prez writes like this

I'm sorry, if you're going to make a big show about how you've got a Department of WAR helmed by a Secretary of WAR and staffed by WARfighters, it's totally inane to then claim that your massive bombing of a foreign country constitutes something other than a war.
Thank you! President Trump is trying to make it harder to vote. Here's why that matters

American publishing regularly punishes women in their 50s by simply not interviewing them for new jobs in the way @saribotton.bsky.social describes here. So itβs great revenge that she launched Oldster magazine on her own, now with 70k subscribers.
As the laid off Middle East News Editor, I concur. Management eliminated the positions of every single staff correspondent and bureau chief in the Middle East.
A wonderful look at Wesleyan University alum Jeff Galloway on the heels of his passing earlier this week. "[Galloway's] power as a coach and motivator came from a life spent testing his own ability to keep goingβ¦His goal, he said, was simply to keep moving forward for as long as he was alive."
Columbia Pres Claire Shipman w/ horrifying details of DHS's abduction of student Ellie Aghaveya.
The major blame here goes to DHS, not Columbia & Shipman sharing details is helpful.
That said:
1) DHS actions weren't just a "breach of protocol." They were unconstitutional and Columbia should sue. π§΅
If Paramount can close its deal to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, Larry and David Ellison will influence nearly every corner of news, entertainment and tech, with holdings that would rival those of the Murdoch family at the height of its powers. nyti.ms/40z4B0M
Iβm not sure we can donate to small independent media our way out of the reality that the media and arts landscapes are controlled by an authoritarian and his friends. Iβm as supportive as anyone else but this seems like a critical problem that goes beyond that.
Why will Trump & Republicans get their asses handed to them in November? This. This right here is why Trump & Republicans will get their asses handed to them in November.π
βAs contemptible as the compulsive lying is, the State of the Union highlighted another deformation of our republic that has reached its apotheosis in Trump: the assumption of presidential supremacy.β

Being a trans journalist is going to work and having to cover how your life is now illegal in your state but also at the same time make sure someone else writes the story so no one can accuse you of being biased and a "trans activist" and then they do the story and you still get accused of it.

New: A comedian set up a fake ICE tip line as a joke. Then 100 calls flooded in: neighbors ratting on neighbors, a teacher reporting a kindergartener. Fans say the viral TikToks revealed deportation's "banality of evil." Conservatives say he should be in prison wapo.st/4kM4qbF
