And a special double #protistsonsky from me today with a second protist from rainforest soil. This testate amoeba has awoken from stasis (dry soil), but hasn't quite emerged from its protective plug. At least that's how I interpret this... in cold weather back in Maine I see something similar!
Here is a Centropyxis testate amoeba picking up a little rock with its pseudopod. Notice the pseudopod attachment point on the culture dish surface and the blebbing that happens there.

Still can't get over the beauty of the spiral shaped amphid 🌀 of this female Achromadora sp. This algae 🦠 and diatom feeder was found in soil from cultivated maize/corn fields in South Africa 🌍. Usually found in aquatic environments and amongst mosses 🏞️ #nematode #ecology #FreeLivinfNematodes
I used the nodule-crushing method throughout my PhD and postdoc work on rhizobia, and it works!
Here we diluted the crushed nodule bacterial community to evenly inoculate our rhizobia (R+) plants! bit.ly/41rwc5S
I find full communities to be more effective than individual isolates, in most cases.
