Q5. This article provided negative generalizations that overlooked the work that great teachers are doing each day. Change the narrative and provide something specific that gives you hope.

LAst question coming in 5 minutes. Y'all have been great and I miss this dearly. #aplitchat
A4. Projects can create self directed learning environments in which students fulfill their natural curiosity that can be squelched by direct instruction.
If students are engaged during class (45-60 minutes), how much more of their time should we expect to own outside of school?

Q4. Offer a counterargument to this statement:
"So it (direct instruction) has been replaced by corn-syrup instruction: more projects, less homework, less memorization. "

As an admin said in my school, everyone is on board for more rigor (parents, teachers, admin, students), until grades come out. #aplitchat
A3. Direct instruction is valuable when information needs to be front loaded in order to scaffold to higher-level thinking. This happened recently when I taught Pride and Prejudice. With so many characters, families, and estates, students needed my help to sort it all out. #aplitchat
Q3. "Direct instruction — by far the most effective form of teaching, from Aristotle to the present — is neither trendy for wannabe “reformers” nor easy for classroom teachers."
Is there any truth to this?

A2. It was click bait, designed to elicit emotions by casting a broad net and it almost caught me until I realized that it was short on solutions as well as empathy.

Q2. What is your biggest criticism with this article?
#aplitchat
A1. My first response to the article was more emotional than cognitive. I found myself feeling some of its sentiments. While this year has been different (because of a cell phone ban) the past two years have been somewhat vegetative. #aplitchat
Q1. Does an article like this do any good?
