One was a mechanical engineer, the other was an accountant-type with the state power company and also a disability rights advocate (a passion of his after brain surgery left one leg partially paralyzed).

Raised Catholic (including 8 years of Catholic school) here! Cursing isn't explicitly a sin but is generally frowned upon. Never heard a priest curse before, but one I knew had a story of accidentally cursing in the company of another person that he'd tell to remind us he was also a fallible human.

I've had my This Is Fine mug so long that the dog has become a ghost and all that remain are flames

This is a great set of articles on how the slashing of federal programs and grants across agencies (USAID, USGS, EPA, just to name a few) has affected global conservation. I still think the US has a lot of influence in the conservation realm, but we have lost so much in just one year.

Yep. The memo text is wild but there's no explaining what criteria were used. It's just 2 tables - 'these schools are bad' and 'these schools might be better alternatives'

ecstatic that my part of FL will get a bit of rain tonight and tomorrow! we're in a roughly 8in rain deficit and tho we def won't get caught up on that, every little bit helps.

very concerned about how much lightning I'm seeing already this evening however. ⚡️🔥

It's sooooo dry!! 😩

I know you've got a track record of complain -> rain the last couple months, maybe we join forces to complain about it to the universe and see if that gets us a bit more? 😅

Editorial: Florida’s fire risk keeps climbing. Don’t ignore it Florida is in the grip of a record drought. Floridians can see it in the withered tones of roadside vegetation and hear it in the dry crunch of their once-green lawns. But those who have been aroun…

"But many Floridians — particularly those who have moved here since 1998 and have no prior experience with wildfires on a massive scale — don’t see these signs and don’t comprehend the omens. They arrived ready to worry about hurricanes, but might not think of fire in the same hazardous terms."

Nothing wrong with feeling hopeful for spring!! This is my 5th year in FL and I'm still amazed and delighted each year that there are birds that start nesting as early as February!

what's the nest searcher equivalent of zugunruhe (migratory restlesness)?

every year as the Florida Scrub-Jay breeding season approaches, I start getting antsy to find nests & become wildly suspicious of darker areas within shrubs (even in non-scrub).🪶

There are two parts of this article:

1 - Historical funding trends & Congressional appropriations.

* Requires a longer conversation on levers of power

2 - "The Republicans Made Peace With Science".

* No, they did not & no they have not. This requires more than a conversation, but a reset.

there's an ant inside my computer monitor! 😳

I've heard stories of this happening with tropical fieldwork computers and actually have a friend who ended up with ants in her laptop after a summer visiting family in Korea and Thailand. Never expected it to happen inside my apartment!

The pronoun labeler, which was by far the most useful labeler on the site, was deleted by its creator. But thanks to @ripperoni.com there’s a new one available. I highly recommend it. It’s a great way to share your pronouns or see someone else’s pronouns at a glance.

Another resistance quilt finished this week. The eye is my own design, the letters are a fpp pattern by QuiltByNight, the rounded corners and black binding are meant to resemble the phones we the people are using to document the horrors and disprove the government’s lies about what they are doing.

If you see this, don't participate. It's a rigged study by Lisa Littman and unethical researcher J. Michael Bailey meant to undermine access to care. Spread the word.
