A hydrothermal vent on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hot, mineral-rich fluids are distributed throughout the ocean via the dispersion cloud, known as the plume. The photo was taken during the M190 research expedition with the MARUM-QUEST4000 remotely operated vehicle. The arm of the robot holds a temperature lance into the plume to measure the temperature there. Photo: MARUM – Center for Marine Environmental Sciences, University of Bremen.

Why are you passionate about your research topic?
There is still so much unknown to be discovered in deep-sea research and especially in my field, lipid and metabolite research, that the explorer's heart is burning! We know that the samples are unique and offer insights into a completely foreign world that we want to explore.
Dr. Florence Schubotz, Organic Geochemist at MARUM, University of Bremen
What impact does your research have?
We need to understand what makes marine ecosystems resilient - also to be able to assess how we can best protect the oceans.
Prof. Dr. Helmut Hillebrand, marine ecologist at the ICBM/ HIFMB, University of Oldenburg
Your research in short: What is the most exciting thing at the moment?
As an organic geochemist, I am very interested in how carbon in its various forms moves through marine biota, the ocean and the sea floor - today and in the past, and how these processes interact with the climate.
Prof. Dr. Kai-Uwe Hinrichs, Organic Geochemist at MARUM, University of Bremen
Why are you passionate about your research topic?
I am fascinated by how tiny microorganisms have such a huge global impact, for example by storing carbon in the ocean.
Prof. Dr. Sinikka Lennartz, ocean modeler at the ICBM, University of Oldenburg
🌊🌍 Celebrate #WorldOceanDay on June 8th! We asked researchers from the University of Bremen and the University of Oldenburg what drives them and what they are passionate about. Read the full interview here ➡️ uol.de/en/news/arti...

Coherent response of zoo‐ and phytoplankton assemblages to global warming since the Last Glacial Maximum
