You know that feeling when you're struggling to stay awake? #kakapo chicks Tiwhiri-A3 and Tiwhiri-A4 in Tiwhiri's nest on Pukenui/Anchor Island. Both around two weeks old, and doing well. #kakapo2026 #conservation #parrots

Female #kakapo Kohengi on her nest with a newly-hatched chick and an egg (unseen). We removed the egg from underneath her and gave it to another female (Phoenix) who had infertile eggs. We're trying to ensure each female on Anchor Island has 1-2 fertile eggs to hatch. #kakapo2026 #conservation

A country surrounded by the ocean, with active geothermal zones, buffeted by winds and basking in sunshine should not be relying on tanker loads of oil, gas and coal shipped half way across the world to run its energy network.

NZ Herald, Shayne Currie: "Bowker is not a big fan of Stuff, and in that respect, his move has been a masterstroke.

It has meant Stuff has faced a costly dilemma: either move out in mid-2027 when the building lease expires – a huge cost, in that Bowker earlier said that Stuff is required to remove its printing press equipment and return the building to its original state – or agree to what is likely to be a substantially higher rent."

I personally view a businessman buying a newspaper's building & kicking them out, basically forcing them into a deal with their competitor, all because they rightly reported on him being so racist he had to leave the Hurricanes, as "concerning" but NZME's Shayne Currie calls it a "masterstroke".

The Government is currently negotiating an Enhanced Border Security Partnership with the US Department of Homeland Security that would grant US agencies, including ICE, automated, direct access to New Zealanders' biometric data and identity records.

ONE BILLION DOLLARS.

IT WAS THE ADDITIONAL ONE BILLION THAT MADE THEM STOP THE DUNEDIN HOSPITAL AND IREX.

No money for hospitals or the ferries, money to prop up fossil fuels.

Investors, I get the feeling that the free AI money isn’t going to be around a lot longer so please give as much of it as possible to me. I need money more than OpenAI does and I promise not to use it on an AI project

Instead I’ll just do more of this sort of thing

IT'S FEBRUARY 2026.

THE RAIL ENABLED HYUNDAI FERRIES FOR I REX WERE MEANT TO ARRIVE BY NOW.

Instead we have no rail enabled ferries, the two we have are clunky as fuck, and there will be no replacement ferries until 2029 at the earliest.

Mining sector says Taranaki seabed plan rejection 'embarrassing' A group representing the mining sector insists the decision rejecting the Taranaki seabed mining proposal is not final.

What’s actually β€œembarrassing” is NZ pimping vanadium as a critical mineral to the US when TTR’s been clear it wouldn’t be extracting the vanadium (it actually can’t do it whoops), wld sell it to China to strengthen steel.
This industry spin is pure greenwash.

Government rejects plan to prevent landslides and save hundreds of millions in Gisborne Plan pitched as a model for other regions too.

It's $36m a year, for goodness sake. The cost to taxpayers in 2023-24 from storm damage *in Tairāwhiti alone* was nearly half a billion. Yet the same govt throws tens of billions at mega-roads because they're very important for the economy. www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3609...

If a union affiliated with NZ Labour (or the CTU, which National and ACT lie about being Labour affiliates) was hosting a high-profile Epstein associate on a speaking tour of NZ it would be the only story for weeks

Remember their reaction to Benjamin Doyle having a slightly naughty Instagram handle

You can boycott the current administration and work with future ones. NZ failed to take a stand on South Africa and it ended with the Olympics Boycott of 76. We still work with South Africa today. This editorial is appeasement pandering to a fascist regime and denies reality in favour of comfort.

We had a $6B climate resilience fund and Nationals squandered it all on tax cuts for their mates so now we get boxes of KFC after weather events instead of properly funded supports and help.

Yay for us I guess??

29.01.2026 06:00 πŸ‘ 176 πŸ” 55 πŸ’¬ 9 πŸ“Œ 7

I'm still mad about this - see the full list of cut projects from the money taken from climate polluters, which would help adaptation and mitigation efforts of the recent weather events, including $900M from the Emergency Response Fund - now frittered away.

Working with #kakapo, this is the best thing you'll ever see. When "candling" an egg you hold your breath, hoping to see this: beautiful embryo development in a fertile egg. This is Tiwhiri's second egg, about 8 days old. About half of eggs are infertile. #kakapo2026 #conservation #birds

RNZ *again* printing extremist PR verbatim without sufficient critique or analysis

Nor a response from opposition or health professionals or NGOs

Nor in an environment where they're promoting, or even reporting, on legitimate health crises or issues

This is a choice

Look, as always, I don't want to pretend journalism is easy, but surely it is *weird* for both of RNZ's articles on this to offer no neutral summary about the work WHO does, the "original mandate" of the organisation, any kind of factual context

It's just the perspectives of various dudes

Demanding that we stop talking about climate change while climate disasters are killing people is the actual politicization, actually

No, the fatal Mount Maunganui landslide was not AI Last week taught us that even in our most distressing moments, there is now no certainty. How do you know if there's a tragic event unfolding, or if someone's been using AI?

Regulation of AI and platforms helps counter mistrust and misinformation. Without it, the reflex when seeing real footage is "it's AI". An important overview of what happened online over the last few days:

NZ taxpayers spent $6M to bring Michelin stars here and only paid $3M to the WHO.
Contributing to world health seems like a much better spend to me. #nzpol
