like pizzagate was one of the entry-level conspiracy theories that inducted people into the qanon cult. and was about people who are closely connected to or themselves directly named in the epstein files (cough bill clinton)

for a nonzero number of boomers that was where it started - they spent their entire lives watching predators get away with shit, and maybe being victimized themselves by ppl with social and political power. Calling them conspiracy theorists pushed them to only seek communities that validated that.

Like I'm not sure if everyone just memoryholed this but this was WHY qanon became such a big problem. Because people combined the recognition of "oh this guy's a fucking predator and the justice system is enabling him" with antisemitic conspiracy theories and more nonsense as they got radicalized

i mean... it was. The insistence that it was a conspiracy theory actively boosted QAnon, because people who were called crazy for recognizing that rich predators had an obscene level of control over the US government got pushed into further radicalization
