Today, we're in court with co-counsel — Children's Rights & the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law — to fight to keep protections for children held in federal immigration custody. These protections are needed now more than ever.

With the current administration’s response to what will happen to children left behind if their parents are deported, proposing foster care as a solution, I am resharing an article I wrote in 2017 during the prior administration. Foster care is not the solution!

Post said over email. “This legislation ensures that financial support follows the child, providing critical protections against misuse and prioritizing the well-being of vulnerable youth.”

This is a real issue in child welfare as well. I will never forget an 11-year-old client who told the judge she had been raped when she entered foster care (because that is what it felt like to her) & the judge disregarded her entire experience and viewed her as a liar thereafter.
Just saw the premiere in NYC - a must watch new doc about the troubled teen industry (TTI). Working with abandoned teens, many who come from these facilities, I can attest, the kids are not alright.

Yet more efforts by a state to avoid accountability for their failure to protect kids in its care.

This Giving Tuesday, let's stand together to support those who need us most—abandoned and discarded youth and adoptees.
Together, we can champion the cause of those often overlooked and build a future grounded in justice, care, and compassion.

While there is a call to action in Utah to address systemic failures in child abuse/neglect investigations, there also needs to be one for the 200+ TTI & RTC facilities & wilderness camps. To do so Utah must prioritize child safety over profit.

Perhaps start by taking at look at Masters Ranch - these are the “coffin beds” the boys sleep in.
Thank you @yep4rights.bsky.social As you know I have been advocating for abandoned adoptees pro bono this year. With the launch of Themis I hope to receive financial support to support this critical work.
One has to wonder about the double standard that often exists when it comes to adoptive families particularly when the same agency is investigating that may have placed the child there in the first place.

Adoptees are often called liars and manipulators. I believe this is part due to misconceptions about RAD as well as the stigma and stereotypes applied to foster children. Help support my work at Themis Youth Law & Advocacy.

This is curious as the class action lawsuit has to do with the fact that 72% of boys 12-17 were being sent OUTSIDE the state to for-profit facilities paying up to $900 per day where they experienced abuse and neglect.
In general adoptive parents claim that they should not have oversight post adoption as biological parents don’t. I believe that if you receive an adoption subsidy there should be reporting requirements like any other benefit. This is one of the reasons why.

Now imagine if that 23 million had been invested in foster care in the first place.

Sadly, trash bags are the standard everywhere in the US when it comes to foster kids. Imagine the message that they internalize ….

Sadly, these reports are no longer as shocking as they once were.
“Another 175 youth spent more than seven years in hospitals beyond their discharge dates because they had nowhere else to go.”

Yet the state is choosing to go to trial on a class action case seeking to reform and improve the system. At one point 71% of boys ages 12-17 were sent to expensive out-of-state facilities where they were abused and neglected.
