Supporting the Work That Makes Digital Spaces Safer Today, (m)otherboard announces Dr. Ka'Lyn C. as our 2026 GBI recipient, and we want to tell you why this matters. (GBI = guaranteed basic income) Technology facilitated gender-based violence is real. Digital misogynoir—the specific, racialized, gendered violence directed at Black women and non-binary femmes online—is real. The harm is measurable, documented, persistent. And Dr. Kay is doing something about it. As Community Safety and Support Steward for Blacksky Algorithms, they're building infrastructure for safer, self-governable online spaces. Not theorizing about safety—building it. Not studying harm from a distance—creating harm reduction strategies inspired by and alongside the communities most targeted. Dr. Kay teaches courses on misogynoir, hashtag activism, hip-hop feminism, and digital storytelling. They're a scholar, activist, community educator, content creator and curator, poet, abortion doula, mentor, board member. Her creations focus on her research, Blackness, and Black popular culture.
