Bomb disposal was his passion.

Interesting interview on the geopolitics of the climate crisis with a career UK diplomat. Good that it's being thought about among that crowd.

Yeah, not sure about that correlation. France has lower FF use than Spain due to all the nuclear but still showing massive variation.

I think I'm not going to post anything except jokes about Spurs between now and the end of the season, it's too depressing otherwise.

It was a joke.

Incredible that our odds of winning the Champions League have doubled in a week,

Listening to OH watching a film with 11yo in the other room. An hour plus into the film "Paul", she just asked "Who's Paul?". 11yo was fairly restrained about it.

I hear the Iranian opposition can speak of little else than when the British are going to come and help them out.

Honestly, it was the 4th minute and Palace were lumping a long throw into the box, then my stream froze and when it recovered they were lumping another long throw into the box (turned out to be a different one) and I was like why am I watching this shit anymore?

You wouldn't have guessed this was the last minute from the press, it was as energetic as that the whole way through.

We're playing the same way as everyone else, just worse. Fuck long throws and corners.

Was trying to place the last time, would've been around then. I think this feels worse because we'd been terrible for years by that point. We hadn't beaten anyone good for about 5 years and were just used to hanging around 15th in the table.

Some of them do look very young right now. Very young and sad.

Finally BBC publish an opinion worth listening to.

Anyone who's ever played football has had times coming out after half time knowing there's nothing but a half of misery coming your way. The question is not what they do this half but what they do next. Now they've just got to lose in the least bad way possible.

Man, not going to the football is also an option for those people.

Is watching the second half an alternative to getting angrily drunk or an accompaniment?

Hilarious isn't it. Have they literally just realised how VAR works?

I reckon they could make a sport out of these brief periods between corners, free kicks and long throws.

Getting relegated just to feel something.

Had this conversation with a high-flying postdoc once (now an academic) where he was moaning about all the admin staff and I was like "Do you really want to be sorting out people's contracts and making sure the lab's air-con gets serviced?"

Can I succeed in convincing myself that a relegation battle is exciting, actually? Just like the battle for top four but with terrible football and less possibility of Thursday night football if you fail.

Would be good if in future the government didn't have to be dragged kicking and screaming into dropping ideas that are obviously stupid and unpopular but I guess we're going to have to go through it at least one more time.

Knew I shouldn't have published all those articles in ACS journals.

It's now an annual ritual for me. Waiting for the ALCS statement to see what I've earned in secondary and residual royalties from photocopies, libraries, etc.

Lowest amount: ยฃ18. Largest amount: ยฃ1900.

If you've got stuff published in the UK and aren't a member of ALCS, you're a chump.

Wow, thanks for this, I'd never heard of it before. Bit confused about the journal articles needing to be claimed within a year of publishing - does this mean if you don't do this you can never get paid for them? Or just you only get paid for the first year?

Also the relevant comparison would be between gen Z and what Boomers thought when they were the age gen Z are now.

Would definitely suggest you look at a single Spanish opinion poll before having this kind of opinion.

You pick one domino up, and all the others pick themselves up. Obviously me picking a domino up involves thousands of bombs and missiles and assassinations and such, but hopefully all the other dominoes can pick themselves up in a different way that also hopefully will be good for me.

Been blocked by a load of people (for me, YMMV) today for basically saying this. "AI doesn't work" was never a great argument, now it just looks silly and reduces your credibility to pursue other arguments.
