Yes it is something special isn't it
Yes it is something special isn't it
I recently spoke at the Liverpool Festival of Data about our participatory data governance work. This is a theme we have been working on for over 10 years. This blog post explains our rationale, the work that has been underpinning it and why this is so important at this point in time.
If you are in Manchester on 18th March this in-person afternoon event should be really good and it's free #IMD25 #opendata
If anyone wants to download a high-resolution version of this as well as the all indices IMD poster they can be downloaded from our Github here: github.com/OpenDataManc...
Poster visualising the creative Education, Skills and Training Deprivation in England in 2025. The visualisation shows the relative deprivation of local authorities with the mist deprived in the top-left hand corner and least bottom right. The shapes are coloured according to the political control of the local authority
After publishing the IMD and Political Control poster in December. I took a dive into the some of the individual indices. One that stuck out was Education, Skill & Training. Many of the LAs shifted position with London doing particularly well. I am unsure why this is, but interested to find out.
Neon sign with the words Open Data Night illuminated
If anyone is interested in what we have been up to lately and some of the events we've got lined up, have a look at our newsletter. We have Open:Data:Night, Design Justice and the LCR Data Community of Practice in Feb, so come join us. mailchi.mp/72539f0e18c4...
There are some really interesting talks already lined up
I wanted dinner recommendations so I scraped 13,000+ London restaurants and accidentally discovered Google Maps is running a shadow economy. Anyway here's a dashboard and a political economy thesis: open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...
As the image is very large it renders really badly on Blusky and Wordpress. A2 high-resolution versions of IMD25, IMD19 and IMD15 can be found here: github.com/OpenDataManc... We are also selling A2 fine art posters of the IMD25 - proceeds go to our community work
Each local authority can have its own set of tableware. Not sure how functional some of it would be though.
If something strange is going on its always the bears
IMD 2019 poster showing relative deprivation across English local authorities
Especially when you compare it to 2019. Leeds is 7 down and 8 across
Visiting from the Green planet by the looks of it
Yep I had to double check as it looked really odd, but there is something interesting going on there.
They can be found on here www.gov.uk/government/s... The link is on the poster, but it is only for reference.
There is a link to a high resolution file that is downloadable from Github on the page. I hadn't realised that WP did that which is annoying
Poster showing with the relative deprivation profiles of the 296 English local authorities laid out. The poster depicts the most deprived local authority of Blackpool top left and least, Hart, at the bottom
The recent release of the Index of Multiple Deprivation by UK Gov. allowed me to indulge my twin interests of psephology and demographics. The results a visualisation of the deprivation profiles of the 296 English local authorities. More info here www.opendatamanchester.org.uk/revisiting-p...

I don't think it is the technology per se although there are some pretty horrendous applications of it, but how it is being used as a replacement for human endeavour in the pursuit of efficiency which is in my mind a false goal.
I was on a conference panel about AI in the Public Sector this week and a question from a healthcare professional inspired me to write an article on the Privatisation of Institutional Memory. Hyperbolic? Maybe. Important? I think yes.
