It’s open source so at least people can see and verify what it’s doing. You make an unfortunately good point. If it becomes law in more places (discord started this practice because of a UK law) then the technology being private and distributed doesn’t matter if it’s illegal to host in most places.

Fwiw I've had pretty good luck with CachyOS overall. It's using KDE and Wayland, drag and drop seemed to work out of the box tho. My issue stem from having an NVIDIA card 🤦♂️

Part of it is that there is a larger push globally to de-anonymize the internet. This is one of the first mainstream apps to start doing this scanning stuff globally so it sets a bad standard. We maybe won’t be impacted today but they could certainly want scans of everyone tomorrow 😕
Also I wish, maybe in the old days 😂 I used to run a Teamspeak server for old school friends, we’d treat it like hanging out in a virtual dorm room.
We moved to discord early on since it was easier to use and had a nice web and mobile app. That group split or I’d be bringing the TS server back 😅

It also seems like they may not ask you to verify if they can determine you’re an adult by your existing usage habits.
It’s still gross though. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything you want to have an expectation of privacy for.
Probably, but I don’t think I’d scan my face.
I primarily use discord for voice chat with different friend groups so my usage shouldn’t be affected much unless they force it for any usage at all.
That being said it wouldn’t be my preferred way to communicate and I’d probably try the alternatives.
There’s not an easy to use drop in replacement. I’ve seen some floated, matrix.org is one of them. It’s an open source alternative that works in a way similar to mastodon.
All these alternatives are a bit more complicated to use and less feature rich at present though.
