My overall pet peeve these days is fiction that values lore and plot and uses words as a means of moving the plot along, as opposed to valuing words

5 weird writing pet peeves:

- most adverbs
- chapter 1 lore dumps
- showing in one sentence and then in the next sentence telling the same thing
- unintended anachronisms
- tumblr-poisoned prose

He’s better known for his portrayal of Jews in Hyperion, in which Sol thinks about the binding of Isaac (a story that tbh we don’t often think about) via analyzing Kierkegaard, who, notably, was not a rabbi. Dan Simmons couldn’t imagine Jews or anyone else thinking beyond his own perspective

Idk what to say about his hatred of Muslims that he didn’t say himself. He wrote Jews from an evangelical perspective in which we just exist so Israel exists so that the apocalypse can happen. Which is literally the backstory of Ilium/Olympos.

Also what was his beef with Catholics?? What was wrong with this guy?? Why couldn’t he imagine a future beyond the day he received his English BA?

Dan Simmons was just inept at writing women because he clearly didn’t think of them as people. His female POV characters were boxes with no personality inside who swore like the boys did

As a teen i really liked his world building and his brash angry characters. As an adult, i think his fiction, including Hyperion, is full of hate, and actually he was only good at writing brash angry straight men which honestly anyone can do.

RIPiss Dan Simmons, my favorite author as a teenager (oops). A shallow fucked up guy capable of writing good fight choreography who was far too misogynistic and racist to take any of his ideas in interesting directions. He was weird about Jews too.

In Endymion, he’s traveling with this child who is allegedly the messiah. In Rise of Endymion, he travels at relativistic speeds without her and when they meet up again she’s old enough to sleep with, which he does. This isn’t the most fucked up thing in the book, just the easiest to fit in a skeet

Ok but then he managed to ruin *endymion* with Rise of Endymion
