The dice consent meme from last year lives in my head rent free. Excited to see what moment worms it's way into my cerebellum this time around.
I may be slightly biased but if you're going to @aireconuk.bsky.social and not planning on attending the just announced @timclare.bsky.social talk on 'The History of Monopoly and the Game of Life' I think you'll be missing out
@amabel.bsky.social @xoe.gay regarding Persuasion I asked a couple of rule questions on BGG about discarding and publicly declaring actions. Would greatly appreciate your input when you have time!
1975: White Christmas, helicopter cards have been placed next to various buildings, where players will use drafted cards to take additional actions to try and effectively airlift people out and return them to their rescue boat.
Persuasion - players have a selection of trait cards in front of them, some face up, some face down, which have abilities and also a number of icons - that you may or may not be interested in as a potential marriage partner.
Isla - two player sheets with tokens of flora, fauna and fossils. A meeple moves around the player sheet through a roll and move, roll and write mechanism based on multiple colourful dice that are placed to one side.
Dualis - a player is holding a hand of cards comprising of two suits and colours. A pile of facedown cards is nearby on the table, a partnership token is placed on top and on to the side, indicating they need to win another trick.
Some additional highlights of games I've recently played - 1975: White Christmas, Persuasion, Isla and Dualis. Feels impossible to summarise all of them in a single post, but please ask if you want to know more about any of them. They are all fascinating (and fun) in one way or another! #boardgames
Adulting. A 'routine' of self-care and chore cards are in front of the player, with a central row of attitude cards, self-care and chores. Their deck and hand of attitude cards are off to one side. Attitude cards have been played on top of the self-care and chores cards, triggering their effects.
I was very happy when some friends asked to play Adulting again and we finally managed to not burn out - and two out of three of us became our ideal selves! This game nails the theme, and the stressed out mood of having too many chores to do with too little time and energy for self care. #boardgames
When roleplaying turns out to be the same ol' mortifying ordeal of being known π
I found a lot of written advice that didn't include examples, so it was really helpful to see it demonstrated, and helped me to better process it!
I really appreciate @ava.foxfort.net and @timclare.bsky.social spending so much time on my question, the stepped through example was really helpful. I think my biggest takeaways are - to be looking for and providing hooks, just going with the first simple tropey ideas, and asking for help.
We're looking forward to Airecon as well - see you there!
Excited to listen! Will report back once I have.
We took a small hiatus but we are back answering questions from @ceethefoxrun.bsky.social on how to be a more collaborative RPG player and from @mattthr.bsky.social on board game collection culling. With @ava.foxfort.net and @timclare.bsky.social

Catching up on But Why Vikings?, @ava.foxfort.net and @giantbrain.co.uk were discussing limited communication in boardgames and I felt compelled to share my favourite sentence from the Quirky Circuits rulebook- 'If players are really feeling compelled to say something, we suggest: βBeep-boop.β'
One month to go till boardgaming Christmas, or as it's also known, Airecon Harrogate. Cannot wait to bring some new and old favourites to share, and see what others are enjoying! Also - Broom Service.
A UK Districts 2026 pin badge and a selection of Netrunner alternate art cards laid out on a table including - Anemone, Mycoweb, Bladderwort, Katorga Breakout, Audrey v2, Heliamphora, Physarium Entangler, Gauss and Nuvem SA.
#Netrunner is so good y'all. Had a fantastic time playing 8 rounds today at the Birmingham District Championship. Shout out to vendors Ams and @thetagmill.bsky.social for some sweet alt arts!
We all deserve so much better. I'm glad you're in a better space right now though.
It's so painfully slow as well. I'm currently in the middle of a 3 month referral wait for talking therapies!
Five boardgames laid out on a tabletop - Blossom, Wizards Showdown, Framlet!, Dualis, and Shochikubai. Additionally there are several photos from Tokyo Game Market and a small zine.
Received my mystery box of games from Fall Tokyo Game Market via @travelgames.bsky.social - initial box opening impressions of what caught my eye - Dualis is a team trick-tacking from Trickarus designer, and Wizards Showdown is realtime bidding game from designer of Yro #boardgames
Wistfully waiting at docks, draped in a shawl as the waves lap in front of me - when will my board game return from freight container shipping...
There's often a thread in BGG, but not always for the region you desire. I've had most success from reaching out to distributors/publishers directly. But even then it's usually more of an estimate than an actual guaranteed release date.
Curse of the Dark. A spoiler free photo of the box, starting tile, newspaper clipping and a 3D stained glass window.
Tonight we played Curse of the Dark, an escape room game. Had an interesting variety of puzzles, overall puzzle logic was satisfying - we only found ourselves using 1 hint. You get to assemble a map of the castle with some 3D elements, such as this stained glass window, as you explore. #boardgames
A natural desire to have when you view the universe atheistic, I think. We dream of reframing the vast uncontrollable forces around us as caused by weird critters in the dark, something that we can blame for the 'bumps in the night' of our day to day lives. Also folktales are cool.
The board state changed so much with 4 players at the table! It was very hard to plan ahead. I'm normally not very AP prone but even I was feeling the pressure in this game. Still enjoyed it though.
Cuzco. The central game board is covered in overlapping hex tiles, forming a landscape of farms and villages. Wooden Inca figures are dotted across the landscape and large resin temples made of several stacking pieces tower the over the board.
We had a lot of fun with Cuzco last night. I love a game where you end up with a unique physical artifact after you've finished. It felt like the amount of options increased as you played. A highly interactive and quite punishing game, maybe runs a little long due to analysis paralysis #boardgames
Getting real tired of having to do research to find out if a board game is AI slop after obtaining it. Second game recently that has blindsided me. There are so many good #boardgames, more so than ever. I do not want AI generated content, I want an experience made by a human who cares.
Generally I struggle more with sandbox TTRPGs, when presented with what feels like infinite choices I tend to freeze up. When I've played with pre-gen characters in set scenarios I've had more success as I feel like I understand how the story is meant to flow.
What's some advice on how to be a more collaborative player? I've played games with GMs that want me to add to the world, and I've struggled to figure out how to share ideas without feeling like I'm dominating the game, or forcing it in a certain direction.
For Dragonholt, there's an old preview article that might be useful in understanding, along with the rulebook sections on Story Points and Time Tracking - www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017...
I feel like the closest I can think of are narrative adventure style games like Legacy of Dragonholt and Lands of Galzyr. Dragonholt especially has a "clockwork village" of characters with their own routines that you can interact with and respond to your actions.
Friends are just enemies you havenβt played Broom Service with yet.
It's frustrating to watch the system continually let down people I care about. Experiencing that first-hand - I can't imagine dealing with. I wish you the energy and ability to give 'em hell.
