Social origins and socioeconomic outcomes: a combined twin and adoption study Abstract. Parents and children tend to have similar socioeconomic status (SES). Sociological theory has often emphasized the role of social mechanisms in i

How much of the intergenerational transmission of SES is due to social factors?

To answer this, shared 🧬 between parents and children need to be considered. In our new study, we use two designs to account for genetic confounding.

We find that roughly 20 percent is due to social factors!

Given your careful reading of this report I would be curious to hear what you think of the reply from the authors. bsky.app/profile/i4re...

This gem is hidden in the response to the response. ”…within a few hours and under extreme time pressure 11,843 households were visited and 22,686 respondents interviewed (two spouses in each household).” Indeed hard to believe 🫠

Just reviewed for Mechanisms of Aging and Development, a respected journal w. IF>5, and found this in the acceptance letter: "This recommendation is primarily based on your esteemed standing in the academic community, rather than on the overall quality of the manuscript itself." What can you say?

Here is data from Norwegian standardised national tests in reading, math and english skills for fifth and eighth grade. Scale should be comparable over time due to anchor design with IRT methodology. Suggests some covid-decline across all subjects (Norway school closures less extreme, though).

Not sure - but suspect Norwegian test score decline largely due to changes in what schools give practice in: the vocabulary test uses word items from early 1950s and the math test tests the kind of pen-and-paper problems later cohorts had less practice with (calculators). "Raven" subtest is stable.

And to think: If only PNAS had required authors to tick the β€œI did not fake my data” box at the beginning of the submission process this whole debacle would have been avoided. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ
