Honeybees are the dairy cows of bees. People brought them over from Europe to make us honey.
The problem with honeybees, esp in resource-limited ecosystems (like hey! cities!) is that they compete with our native bees for food.

Completed t-shirt design for a club. It's a weevil with the colour scheme of a bald eagle, flying to the left. The weevil's legs resemble eagle talons, and the elytra + beetle wings have feather-y shapes incorporated into them.
Idea sketch for t-shirt design. A weevil is sketched in red ink and an eagle in green ink. The animals are overlapped and aligned to help think of ways to combine their features.

Pen drawings of three birds requested by IG followers in 2018. Art was done in a sketchbook and with BIC multicolor pens. An eagle flies toward the top-right corner of the page, colors mostly black and dark blue with a touch of light blue. The underside of the eagle is viewed, much like looking up at circling vultures silhouetted in the sky. A blue jay sits on a tree branch, somewhat central in the art, colors mostly dark blue and light blue. The jay sits with its back to the viewer, looking back over its right shoulder. A (brave) sparrow stands to the right of the blue jay on the same branch, colors mostly light green and dark green with a touch of light blue. The sparrow attempts to puff up, wings raised in a threatening manner, at the jay to spook it off. There is a large tree branch that stretches from the bottom right corner of the art and stretches over to the left edge of the page, it gradients from light green to light blue, and ends in a big leafy bunch on the left side. The rest of the page was left white.

The wing venation resembles bird feathers. It is supposed to be a top view of the butterfly in flight, so it flies toward the top-left corner of the watercolor paper. The piece is divided in half diagonally, where the butterfly takes up the majority of the bottom-right half, and green and brown foliage fills in the top-left half of the painting.
Started in December 2021, finished in December 2025.
I like what I tried to do with this, but I am no watercolor master so I'll just have to keep pushing myself with it.

The artwork is made up of many different petroglyph-inspired animal figures. The animals are all moving to the left. In the foreground you see three wolves and four ravens chasing after two bull elk and one doe in fairly dark lines. In the background are similar style elk that use smaller artwork and lighter lines to represent being further away. All the foreground animals have gold foil circles into their design around their heart's location and airway location. The entire piece has been given a distressed treatment.
This is probably the largest art I've made in a long time; it's 16x48 inches at 300dpi. All of the animals are inspired by petroglyphs and cave art from around the world on top of the shapes found within the animals themselves. #art #caveart #petroglyph #deer #wolves #ravens #raven #wolf #elk

Whoops, I forgot to post this yesterday.
Cretan giant centipede (Scolopendra cretica). Though almost all endemic mammals of the Mediterranean islands are extinct, there is still numerous unique species to preserve: reptiles, arthropods, plants and so on.
An ink and marker drawing of a squash bee (Xenoglossa strenua) for the prompt, "niche." The bee is facing right and has a pronounced nasal region of its face; I don't know specific anatomical names for bee facial structures (I would guess it is the labrum...) It basically looks like a hairy bee with a big nose. There are squash/gourd flowers, tendrils, and gourd shapes incorporated throughout the art: flowers are mostly on the hind legs+ thorax, and the plant tendrils are mostly background features. Color scheme is primarily greens, yellows, orange, and tan.
Got lost in the squash with this one...
Squash bees are specialists on cucurbits, and I think that's pretty cool and niche of them.
