I write back to them a lot because it's funny, and because I want to get them to admit that they are trying to extract money from me. And invariably, oh you want me to pay to be on your podcast! Or be included in that roundup article!
If I wasn't highly attuned to exactly this aroma of bullshit, they would seem legit at first glance (aside from the fact that most are very obviously written using ChatGPT). They seem like bookclub invitations, or podcast interview proposals, or just telling me about an article inclusion.
So a think that is *wildly* different between the publication HENCH five years ago and VILLAIN coming out this year: the number of targeted scam emails I receive as a writer with a book coming out is ASTRONOMICAL.
