“It IS tricky to rock a rhyme that’s right on time. I made a list of some other words that rhyme with time: Crime, tim, crumb and time.” - Run-G.P.T.
Reminded that there are few more corrosive trends in higher education in recent years than the divide and conquer approach to undermining faculty solidarity by focusing on numbers of majors. Each degree pathway at an institution is strengthened by each other form of expertise available to students.
Also the literature on the various functions of pointing in signed languages would probably be useful to look at: www.humanamente.eu/index.php/HM...
This is really interesting! I’d love to hear more about it. Certainly the link between gesture and discourse newness is something that’s been described (e.g. www.frontiersin.org/journals/psy...)
Stephen Colbert’s interview with James Talarico is super.

Excited for my first AAAS! Come to our session and learn how linguistic diversity is not (currently) a strong suit of AI models. I'll be alternating between my AI-optimist and -pessimist hats. #AAASmtg #linguistics

@phono-logical.bsky.social cool data! I don’t hear the second one as an implosive, but definitely looks/sounds weaker than the first one. Wondering if lower pitch/vowel quality following the second one is contributing to an implosive percept?
Friends, take action to prevent grant funding decisions at NIH and NSF from being made by political appointees, instead of experts in scientific fields themselves!
Just heard that Dianne Bianchi NICHD Director was fired and NIDCD has an ominous announcement on its home page. Every day is a worse nightmare than the day before
A bookshelf filled with various books about gesture, with a prominent book in the center titled 'Gesture: A Slim Guide' by Lauren Gawne. The book cover features a black line illustration of a person with abstract representation of eight different hands doing gestures.
It's publication day for Gesture: A Slim Guide
If you have been wanting to think about gesture in your own research, bring it into your teaching or connect with the field of Gesture Studies, this is for you. It's under 50k words and has a nifty glossary too.
This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH
