The group will work collaboratively across Barcelona and Montreal (CHU Sainte-Justine), strengthening BBRC’s international research network and broadening our neuroscience approach to #Alzheimer’s prevention and other age-related conditions.

A multilevel, collaborative strategy:
• Large population cohorts with multimodal data (MRI, cognition, cardiometabolic, environment)
• Randomized trials + genetic instruments to strengthen causal inference
• Animal + cellular models to test mechanisms and validate hypotheses
Their approach is lifespan #brainhealth: from prenatal development and childhood through adolescence, midlife, and older age.
They’ll study how the interplay between genes and life-long environment and experiences impacts brain health at each stage.
This group will study why some brains are more vulnerable to change and why others show resilience when facing adversity and risk factors, and how this shapes cognitive decline and dementia across life.

So happy to have participated in this research. At the BBRC, we are committed with biomarker validation across diverse cohorts, which is key to reducing bias, refining cut-offs, and advancing equitable access to future diagnostics and therapies.
The authors evaluated blood biomarkers including the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio, p-tau217 and p-tau18), and NfL. The results show that these markers are consistently associated with cognitive impairment and with brain changes relevant to the disease.

A multicentre @nataging.nature.com study provides pivotal evidence on blood biomarkers in #Alzheimer’s disease.

This work was possible thanks to the ALFA cohort at the BBRC, supported by Fundació La Caixa, which follows cognitively unimpaired participants at risk for #Alzheimer’s disease, and the commitment of its volunteers, crucial for advancing preclinical Alzheimer’s prevention research.
Results: PDPH was 9.6% at 24h and 4.7% at 7 days, and when it happened, it was almost always mild. Importantly: no severe cases, no epidural blood patches, no hospitalizations.
What’s in the protocol?
✅ 500 mL IV 0.9% saline
✅ 22G atraumatic “pencil-point” needle
✅ 13.5–15 mL CSF collected without negative pressure
✅ 45 min supervised rest
Applied across 1,147 lumbar punctures in 724 cognitively unimpaired adults
The #BBRC and @hospitaldelmar.bsky.social implemented a standardized protocol to make CSF collection safer & more tolerable, assessed outcomes in the ALFA study, and benchmarked results against previous studies.

Lumbar puncture is essential to study cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, especially for #Alzheimer’s research in pre-clinical stages. 🧠💧
