Women are understudied, underdiagnosed and undertreated for CVDs. Our study calls for more accurate CVD risk prediction and effective risk screening in women, especially young women, who have a high depression prevalence and are traditionally underestimated for CVD risks. ♥️💙💜💚🧡💛🩵🩷
💜 Main findings 3 💜:
This sex difference was not explained by well-known risk factors, e.g. BMI and high cholesterol.

Similar associations were seen between women who have and have not gone through menopause at study enrolment.
♥️ Main findings 1 ♥️:
Using UK Biobank data, genetic risk of depression was associated with increased risk of atrial fibrillation, coronary artery disease and heart failure even in the absence of a depression diagnosis or psychiatric medication use. The same was not seen in men.
