Anyone else remember singing Roll On, Columbia, Roll On in grade school music classes? Woody Guthrie wrote the song in 1941 when he was hired by the Bonneville Power Administration to write songs promoting the constructions of dams along the Columbia river. The song is the official folk song of Washington State.

A Killdeer chick camouflaged quite nicely against a weathered curb near airport Road in Chehalis, Washington. It is a fuzzy blob of browns and buffs and white with long grayish pink legs.
The little ones are stinkinβ cute! π₯° This was taken it quite a distance, Iβd love to get a better photo someday.
Beautiful collage, Shantha. The bird of paradise blossom is stunning.

Both of these photos were taken at Ridgefield NWR. A solitary or pair of Killdeer are often seen working the waterβs edge.
And here is a view of those breast bands with the Killdeer facing front.
Here is a Killdeer, in the morning light facing to the right and standing in shallow water. It is a brown and white bird with a darker head and breast bands.
The Killdeer is a plover with a double breast band and large red-orange eyes that is often found foraging on open ground.

An weathered animal vertebrae, likely from a deer, rests atop a lichen covered rock against a background of a grassy slope in the Columbia Gorge near Catherine Creek.
A weathered skull of a deer, probably a buck, and likely a Columbia Black-tailed deer, sits on a lichen covered branch of an oak tree along the Memaloose Hills Trail near Mosier, Oregon.
The Deerly departed
Bones (likely) of Columbia Black-tailed deer, seen while hiking among the oak forests of the Columbia Gorge. In the wild, average lifespan is said to be around six years. Predators such as cougars, black bear, or coyotes; or harsh winters can cause their death.

Thank you, Margot! The youngsters at the refuge often seem less wary, finding themselves right next to the road.
