To them, things worth investing in are big corporations, natural resources, and highways. And yes, we do need these things
But we also need things that spark joy and connection. Shows to see, interesting places to visit, programs for young people AND adults.
Our politicians do not value labour that makes our communities more connected, more vibrant, and more human.
I suspect our gov fully expects that volunteers and organizations will pick up the slack. Just like our former premier expected women to manage childcare
Most of these organizations have a few (under)paid staff, and rely hugely on volunteer hours and fundraising to make things happen.
The funds being cut are a small budget line for the government, but are devastating for the effected organizations.
It's hard to explain, but to me, the NSian cuts to arts and culture carry echoes of Premier McNeil's comments about covid-era childcare being dealt with "organically"
Like caregiving, the "soft" work of community building, place making, and storytelling is not viewed as worthy of investment
Oops, I guess those stories are now earmarked for affordable housing in perpetuity
I’ve gotta say, I am a big fan of NSian pharmacists being able to write prescriptions for minor ailments
Booked the first appointment of the morning and was home with a prescription within an hour. So much better than playing walk-in roulette, and frees doctors up for more serious issues

To put it mildly - I’m not impressed. I had hoped the mayor was finished grandstanding, posturing, and pitting himself against council, but apparently he’s still building his case for ’strong mayor’ powers by setting up losing fights so he can prove that council won’t work ‘with’ him.

It’s much more expensive to deliver services to lower density areas
The cap ensures that renters and new home buyers pay more than their share

We have half a million people
we need to stop acting like it’s desirable for every household to have a car or two.
The convenience of drivers is not more important than the safety of those who walk, roll, and use transit to get around.

Since OPOR, I am issued a plastic-y hospital bracelet at each of my OB appointments
They show your full legal name and birth date, so I would normally shred it
But it’s not paper, so if you care about sorting your recycling, it’s an extra layer of annoying

They’re doing some truly impressive parkour off my internal organs
For a small grocery store in such a walkable neighbourhood, they’ve really gone out of their way to make the experience miserable for anybody not arriving by car
I only go to get specific gluten free products I can’t find elsewhere
