Dear Secretary Noem,

On behalf of our communities, we urge you to immediately release Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia graduate student and lawful permanent U.S. resident, and return him to his home and family in New York City.

On the night of Saturday, March 8, Mahmoud Khalil was arrested and taken from his Columbia University apartment by DHS agents to an undisclosed location. In a statement on X, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the administration would be detaining Khalil, a green card holder, in connection to his alleged participation in pro-Palestinian protests. Khalil has been denied his Constitutional right to due process, and is being held without legal justification or evidence that he has violated any laws.

The treatment of Mahmoud Khalil by the Department of Homeland Security is not only inhumane, it is a blatant violation of his legal rights. He has been separated illegally from his pregnant wife, who is a United States citizen, and detained without due process thousands of miles from home. We see these actions by the Trump administration for what they areโ€”a flagrantly unconstitutional attempt to suppress free speech and incite fear.

The administration's pattern of targeting the rights of students and immigrants to speak against injustice undermines democracy and makes everyone less safe. We're writing to urge his immediate release back to his family in New York City. We also call on the administration to remove ICE and DHS from our campuses. Finally, we urge Columbia University to cease any and all cooperation with immigration officials who violate our sanctuary city protections and put their students at risk.

The Trump Administrationโ€™s treatment of Mahmoud Khalil is inhumane and unconstitutional.

Today, I was proud to join NYS Assemblymember Valdez, NYC Council Member Avilรฉs, and 27 city, state, and federal officials to call for his immediate release.

Arrest of Palestinian protester shows escalation in Trump deportation efforts The move is an escalation in Trump's effort to increase deportations from the U.S. and strip protections from those who violate the new administration's priorities.

Political dissent is not a crime and should not be grounds for canceling a green card.

โ€œMy body my choiceโ€, my a$$. Forgive my Latin, but this even beyond the impact that lack of herd immunity has on the most vulnerable. It could make it impossible or very difficult to access vaccines even for those of us who believe in science. Itโ€™s not irresponsible, itโ€™s murderous.

Could flu shot supply fall short this year? FDA's canceled meeting sparks worries Flu vaccine makers may face a last-minute scramble to produce enough doses after an FDA advisory committee meeting was abruptly canceled.

So let me guess, no flu shots next year? I hope these fears are overblown. I canโ€™t imagine what this could mean for vulnerable populationsโ€”like our over 65, or pregnant women, or immunocompromised.

We're not done yet | 18F

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

NIH ban on renewing senior scientists adds to assaults on its in-house research Policy follows firings of tenure-track scientists and suspension of training programs

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. Theyโ€™re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world.
