Half red half silver cross with square in the middle and serif ends on the back of neck part of a red stole.
Happy feast of St Chad to anyone in @lichfielddiocese.bsky.social - which sponsored and ordained me! Pic is the cross of St Chad on the back of my red stole.
I think that diary transparency is really key. It’s easy to assume the vicar isn’t doing anything when you don’t see them and think just one phone call on a day off won’t matter
An update email this morning on the books that are my remuneration for some academic work. For international orders delivery is a minimum of 6 - 8 weeks. Which means I will forget all about them and it will be a lovely surprise when they arrive!
Thanks!
Three crocus plants in a pot. One with white flowers and orange stamens. Two with yellow flowers. The ones on the left more a soft butter yellow. On the right bright yellow wirh brown/orange streaks.
Today’s #TinyJoys crocii in the garden (is that the correct plural for crocus?)
Close up of round pink catkins on twigs against blurred background
Close up of long hello green catkins against a blurred background of the tree they are growing on and grass. The catkins are being gently blown to one side in the breeze as if they were dancing
Today’s #BigJoy is blue sky, sunshine, warmth, gentle breeze and the time to put on my wellies and go for a walk after lunch. The #TinyJoys are dancing catkins
Facebook post from Bedford Borough Council: Wishing Bedford Borough a Happy Lent, the period of 40 days when many Christians may choose to give up certain luxuries and make space to reflect, pray, and read the Bible to prepare for the celebrations of Easter. Reply from Maggie Tyers: Funny you put Ramadan and eid up first. Its a Christian country first and foremost. Reply from Bedford Borough Council to Maggie Tyers: Ramadan began on February 17. That is why we put our Ramadan message on social media yesterday. Lent began today, which is why our Lent message went on social media one day later. The date of Lent is determined by the church calendar, rooted in the decisions of the Council of Nicaea (325 AD). The official start of Ramadan traditionally depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon. Bedford Borough Council holds no authority over the Council of Nicaea and was not responsible for the creation of the moon 4.53 billion years ago.
Beautiful work here from Bedford Borough Council.
Very smooth. I even managed to miss the worst of the rain walking between bus and cathedral both ways.
Close up of white blossom on a branch against a background of branches and a dull grey sky.
It may have been a cold wet grey miserable sort of day weather wise. But we have blossom #TinyJoys
OK I remember Small Gods which is brilliant, but that was about religion in general and not the archaic and wonderful medieval constitutions and structures (and characters!) of some cathedrals. But its ages since I read them all so happy to be wrong
Conversation at evening prayer yesterday about precentors and succentors and minor canons and priest vicars. The conclusion was it was a shame Terry Pratchett never put a cathedral on Discworld.
😳
ah, found it, under H for Hallelujah and not A for Alleluya. And yes, that last verse as an extra doxology would be passable, but as a replacement for the last verse of the original definitely not! Cuts short the theology of the hymn!
Now I'm curious. And its not in the combined Mission Praise which is the only copy I've got to hand at all!
"Just a bunch of people going to each other's houses."
Much as I like Pride & Prejudice I find it impossible to deny that this is the greatest review of it of all time. www.tom-cox.com/why-reading-...
My version has the two sides too, but I had to get it from a charity shop as when I tried to buy it, the version available new only had one side, pre-BR
The newer “steam train” version has too many lines to be really mean 😂
Great game of Britain is one of my favourite board games. Especially the original edition.
A miniature iris flower from above against a background of foliage - white with a very delicate blue colour on the tips. Its also got raindrops on it.
We have this stunning miniature iris in the pot with snowdrops in the garden. Every year I forget its there so every year I have a lovely surprise in February #TinyJoys
Sub-skeet. I keep seeing posts from synod referencing the ABC and doing a double take becuase the picture is ++Sarah not ++Justin. It’s going to take my brain a while to adjust.
Photo of a book cover. Background is half a portrait of a dark haired white man. Text is Fallen Founder: the life of Aaron Burr by Nancy Isenberg.
11th Feb. I’ve been reading this on and off since last April. It’s a solidly researched and fascinating account of someone I knew next to nothing about. I learned so much about that period of American history, politics and society. Slightly slow and solid writing in places but glad I persevered
My motivation is to actually finish some of the pile of books I’m partway through and maybe even start on the bigger pile of waiting to be read books.
Inspired by @revdphilippa.bsky.social my first book finished this year is God didn’t make us to Hate us by Rev Lizzie McManus-Dail. Read with the @feministtheology.bsky.social book group from Advent to Candlemas. Excellent inclusive bite sized Bible reflections and reworkings of prayers.
That’s a good idea actually. I might try it too.
(Did a bit of academic work that got paid in books but from a limited range!)
I have two “theology for fun” books on the way. Including a bio of Karl Barth!
Sadly despite alerting people to it I didn’t manage to see either myself.
