That's just one way lenacapavir can stop the virus. It's so effective as a therapeutic & prophylactic because it targets multiple stages of the HIV life cycle. Others have shown that it also stops the capsid from entering the nucleus, & disrupts assembly of new capsids.

Super cool to see @science.org named anti-HIV drug lenacapavir as Breakthrough of the Year. πŸ§ͺThis breakthrough is underpinned by a wealth of basic research. Our contribution is to show how the drug cracks the protective HIV capsid πŸ‘‡https://doi.org/10.7554/elife.83605

The #HIV capsid mimics host chaperones to gain access into the nucleus, solving a long-standing mystery – David Jacques' team published in Nature.

We use #SingleMoleculeπŸ”¬to see how a capsid-targeting antiviral (lenacapavir) hacks assembly of the HIV capsid, which normally protects the #HIV genome. Now also with real-time visualization of the drug breaking open the capsid. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
