Stars are disappearing before our eyes β€” and something in us is shifting For most of human history, the night sky has been a shared inheritance, a source of wonder. Now, more than a billion children see barely any stars in the night sky above their homes. So what does that...

'We are losing the stars. Not all at once, but quietly, one streetlight, one neon sign, one expanding suburb at a time.'

When someone says β€žScientists do not want you to knowβ€œ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.

The petition for a writ of certiorari is denied. JUSTICE
KAGAN would grant the petition for a writ of certiorari.
JUSTICE SOTOMAYOR, with whom JUSTICE JACKSON joins,
dissenting from denial of certiorari.
This case asks whether federal law prohibits the poorest
prisoners from splitting the $350 fee required to file a federal lawsuit when it allows everyone else to do so. The answer statutorily appears to be no. Because the decision below held otherwise and deepened a split among the Courts
of Appeals, the Court should grant the petition for a writ of
certiorari.

Petitioners Topaz Johnson and Ian Henderson were incarcerated at High Desert State Prison in California when
they filed this lawsuit in federal court. According to their
complaint, corrections officers forced them and a third prisoner to stand in filthy cages that reeked of urine and measured 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet. They alleged that the officers
forced them to stand in those cages for nearly nine hours
with their hands cuffed behind their backs.

By a 6–3 vote, SCOTUS refuses to review a judge-made rule that bars indigent prisoners from splitting the filing fee among themselves when filing a federal suitβ€”even though everyone else is allowed to split that fee. These defendants were allegedly tortured. www.supremecourt.gov/orders/court...

Pro-Trump activists who say they are in coordination with the White House are circulating a 17-page draft executive order that claims China interfered in the 2020 election as a basis to declare a national emergency that would unlock extraordinary presidential power over voting.

Being a pregnant woman in the US is more dangerous than being a police officer.

Deaths per 100,000:

Police officers: 11.3
Pregnant women: 18.7

It is almost twice as dangerous to bear a child as it is to be a cop.

CLIMATEWIRE | The Trump administration's plan to dismantle a major scientific research center could cause property insurance prices to increase
across the country, according to an industry group representing actuaries. The warning adds a new dimension to the potential breakup of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, whose climate data is used by the insurance
industry to help predict financial losses and set rates. "We're incredibly reliant on curated and unbiased data sets available to the public," said Peter Ott, who leads a research committee at the American Academy of Actuaries. The academy said in a recent letter that disrupting the
center would "undermine the stability and affordability of insurance." The White House budget office stunned the scientific world when it announced in December that it would break up the federally funded center, which budget director Russell Vought called "one of the largest sources of climate alarmism." The move is among an array of steps taken by the Trump administration to
dismantle programs aimed at addressing climate change.

Climate denial is expensive!

The American Academy of Actuaries warns that closing the National Center for Atmospheric Research β€”Β which the Trump regime calls β€œone of the largest sources of climate alarmism" β€” would lead to higher prices for home insurance and thus for housing itself.

The boys’ club: How Epstein’s influence shaped the exclusion of women in STEM In one email, an AI researcher suggested it’s β€œhard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why another woman hates you.”

What a joy to read… One shouldn’t be surprised at the type of men Epstein decided to fund/hang out with, but it does make one think about how other scientists talk about their female colleagues behind closed doors.

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.

In an Intense Election Year, New Post Office Rules Could Trip Up Voter Registration A change in how mail is postmarked could lead some voters to miss key deadlines, including voter registration. Advocates worry the people most affected will be those already facing voting barriers.

β€œAny mail that’s getting dropped into a blue box is not getting postmarked on the same day, and likely not on the day after either,” says the leader of a postal workers’ union.

This could have tremendous implications for voting:

Yup, he did pay a fee. I wonder if the one local organizer there for the day was also effectively scammed into participating? The hotel venue was at least sympathetic and let them use a room to basically self-organize talks on their own on the next day (only enough participants for 2 days of talks).
