Canadian mining companies’ role in pushing for reforms to weaken the country’s Glacier Law must be denounced. In the context of the climate crisis and worsening water scarcity, national legislation that protects precious fresh drinking water should not be weakened but respected.

I've explored the ocean's deepest part. Trump wants to destroy it. | Opinion I've been to the Mariana Trench. The choice is clear: Protect one of earth's last frontiers or destroy it before we even understand what we're losing.

Great to hear from one of the few people who has actually been to the deep why we need to protect it

(I think it says a lot for the men who want to send machines down to the seabed that they seem to have no interest in it other than to make money out of it).

So B.C. just went ahead and approved the problematic Copper Mountain expansion without bothering to address, much less resolve, the Nations' concerns. Not a smart move for either the Province or the company.

Beyond "perceptions of dispossession” there is indisputable, violent dispossession in the loss of forest/crop/grazing lands, loss of water supplies, and forced relocation, and not just in Ghana.

CHARTS: US copper glut hides refining crunch Benchmark Mineral Intelligence says that refining bottlenecks, not mining output, keep the US reliant on foreign copper processors.

"In fact, if you remove all US overseas mines, the US still is self-sufficient for raw materials [copper]. The problem is that the US doesn’t have the processing capacity ... the US should increase scrap processing before focusing on overseas mine investment."

Are electric cars really an environmental success story? It is not lost on local communities that the global South is being asked to bear the environmental cost of making batteries for electric cars so that wealthy countries can decarbonize.

We know we must reduce our fossil-fuel use and electric cars are one important way to do that. But we need to face the environmental and human damage caused by the production and disposal of the batteries that make this possible, writes Maude Barlow. www.nationalobserver.com/2026/02/11/o...
