one thing that helped a lot was to loosen my grip; then choose a smaller needle. Most of mine are on size 0. By not gripping the needle the socks slide like magic. Also experiment with 8” needles; no bend at join; very sharp tip. There is a perfect circular for us all. Ask to try at knit shop.
