I had better hand back the 1st class honours degree I graduated with last year and my distinction modules at master's level too. I didn't get high enough grades at A level to go to university 20+ years ago but seem to be doing pretty well now, like many students I know

And they seemingly have a fair amount of support too. Let's hope we are not adding Farage onto that list any time in the near future

If we want research to be deemed credible, we need to stop making sensationalist headlines from fragments of data. We need to look at full data sets, of the nuances. We need to speak to the people this is affecting and find out why not just the p value (that may or may not have been hacked)

I am not a fan of Haidt. I agree with unsupervised, risky play benefiting child development, for most children. I do not agree with his black and white stance on technology and mental health. He has taken some research and run with it, without being critical, to make book sales and money

I am now taking this forward with the support of the Psychology EDI committee by applying for funding to offer longer term support for future student-parents. #StudentParents #ParentJugglingAct #PostGradParent

Once upon a time, parents raised a child with the support of a village, for many that no longer exists. I am delighted to have started this support for student-parents alongside a fellow student with our study and play sessions.

Anecdotally parents are one of the highest groups to drop out of degree courses but universities do not usually collate data on this group (Todd, 2024). It can feel like we are an invisible group, usually collectively held with other groups such as carers or mature students.

School holidays often do not align with university breaks. We also struggle to ask for help and experience discomfort bringing children onto campus (even though they are always welcomed!).

Student-parents face unique challenges on balancing studies with childcare responsibilities, financial strains and limited time to study (Todd, 2023). We often do not have time (or energy!) to attend social event on campus and can feel a lack of sense of belonging.

The front page of "The Scottish School Grounds Survey Report 2025 by Professor John H. McKendrick", showing two images of primary school children engaging in outdoor activities in two different types of school grounds. In the first image, the children are working together to carry a fallen branch through their leafy grounds. In the second image, the children are running and sliding down a tarpaulin on a grassy bank with houses visible beyond the fence behind them. The title of the report is printed in white text at the top of the cover, with the logos of the partner organisations, Learning through Landscapes, NatureScot, and Play Scotland printed on a white banner at the bottom of the cover.

Based on what I have seen, Reform are going for the UK equivalent of MAGA, they distrust science. This will appeal to them whilst not entirely alienating anyone else who may vote for them or leaving them open to the mockery Trump is currently receiving. They are getting splinters from the fence

25.09.2025 10:10 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Terrifying that we could also be facing this in the UK in 4 years time. As the wife of someone with ILR I feel like it is going to be a sleepless 4 years full of fear and uncertainty

I have never felt so terrified of the world as it currently stands. Autism myths from a world leader, war in so many countries, the weight of the next 4 years waiting to see if our family will get ripped apart by IRL reforms. There is so much fear, how are we supposed to keep going?

Black and white cartoon with title 'Ten messages for a man who thinks children should stay off the roads and stick to the park'.

Text of image:
1. We need to encourage children to be active, not continually limit them
2. How are they supposed to get to the park (man saying 'get off the pavement')
3. Two bike riders: 'It's fine, we're riding to the park'
4. Open spaces are disappearing (building site with crane)
5. 'No cycling in the park' notice
6. Non-drivers pay for roads too (person with tax envelope)
7. Why don't we make the streets safer for children, not banish them?
8. Children were there first (time line showing this, with 'scale deliberately vague')

Taking risks in play helps children grow.
πŸ§—β€β™‚οΈ They learn limits
🧠 Build resilience
πŸ’ͺ Gain confidence

The goal isn’t zero riskβ€”it’s balanced risk with big benefits.

We want children to love being outdoors, we need to make the space appealing to them. Getting this right at school takes away the play inequalities children face outside of school #playistheway

Being playful is an integral part of being a #PlayTherapist. This connection with their inner child enables therapists to empathise and connect with the children they work with in a childlike way.
The non-judgmental connection enables children to feel accepted and permitted to be their true selves.

The article does explain this, but tired stressed out parents will potentially only see the headline. Parenting groups and other press will also only focus on the headline and spread further stress. I know it's not the researchers fault, I wish the press would report research better.

If we want to do the best for children, we need to support the parents without shame or judgement to be the best of themselves. Parenting is one of the most vulnerable periods in many adults lives.

As a parent, TA and psychology student I will always be happy to see research and articles that are for the good of the child. But also as a parent (before my studies) I know how many of us will take a headline to heart and be sent into a downward spiral.

Secondly, are we going to offer support to parents who shout, without criminalising them as a first step? So many parents, particularly mums from my own experience, are struggling with their own mental health and breaking their own cycles of poor parenting that adding another layer could break many
