De trend is duidelijk - in 2025 waren er een kwart minder aanvragen in Nederland, en bijna 1/5 voor de hele Europese Unie.
Sterkste daling bij Syriërs - alle hens aan dek zodat dat zo blijft - maar ook bv. bij Turken en Colombianen.

Because there are really only two certainties: arrivals fluctuate (they went up, and now they go down again) and conflict and instability are the most important drivers.
Let's keep an eye on those numbers. While we can expect some disruptions due to the current instability (e.g. disruption in flights out of the country) the numbers will speak for themselves.
A significant exception are - probably unsurprisingly by now - Venezuelans. For the 4th year in a row the number of applications increased - almost exclusively lodged in Spain - putting them at an all-time high.
Everyone is still wrapping up their annual reports for 2025, but we can already conclude that asylum applications fell drastically across the EU (by around 20%, it seems).

Interestingly, the European Commission has already ordered X to retain all internal documents and data relating to Grok through 2026 to ensure authorities can investigate compliance. It would not be the first time that the Commission acts against the company.

Another is the AI Act, which prohibits AI practices that exploit vulnerabilities of individuals in a manner that materially distorts behaviour and is likely to cause significant harm.

One of them is the EU’s Digital Services Act, under which hosting child sexual abuse material or failing to mitigate risks is illegal. Platforms must act — removing content promptly and alerting authorities — if they want to keep their liability protections.
