“It looks like a tiny solar system. But instead of planets, it’s a snapshot of my research journey in the lab,” says Sadiya Tanga, a chemistry graduate student at Ashoka University.

Another part of my poking at the resurgence of #film #photography for C&EN: I shot a roll and had it developed for the first time in many years. #cat #vibe #filmicLook #plants #flowers

ICYMI: The cleaning industry has a good base of durable demand compared to some end-markets, but are still feeling a pinch from consumers cutting costs and chemical makers coping with rough economic conditions. cen.acs.org/business/spe.... And … bonus photos

Rarely have I felt such simultaneous anger and empathy for a protagonist.

It makes me want to be softer with my children and more skeptical of capitalism that presents itself as a public benefit.

Of all the books I’ve read, only a book entirely about worms contained more instances of the word “worms”

Notice for #chemsky: Haldor Lanxess is a novelist, Haldor Topsoe and Lanxess are chemical engineering and chemical firms. If you buy the novel Independent People by Haldor Lanxess as prof dev reading because you're only half paying attention, it is a grim saga about WWI-era Iceland shepherds.

I would have paid admission to sit in on the Académie française meeting where they acquiesced to that one.

Also there's a whole #nuclear waste recycling thing here too I barely go into, but could be worth exploring.

Betavoltaics! Its like photovoltaic electricity generation with β particles from radioactive decay instead of photons. And folks with some serious backing are trying to bring it to market as a battery. Read more in @cenmag.bsky.social . #nuclear #startups #news #chemsky

Whereas in democracies, Id hope to say you see a wider range of topics with more pure research and more public-interest applied research

I'd look at what research gets funded in democracy vs other systems. In France before the revolution it was pretty much just 1) What was useful to merchants and traders or 2) What rich self-funding scientists were interested in.

Decarbonizing with a box of hot bricks Can thermal batteries marry chemical plants to renewable energy?

Thermal batteries store energy in the currency that chemical plants actually spend: heat. And they offer a way to marry renewables with 24/7 operations.

"Whalepunk" is a term I just learned while researching for an interview tomorrow with @scigorski.bsky.social; like steampunk but a counterfactual present where we stuck with whale oil as the primary hydrocarbon source.

Description of hyaluronic acid
Class: Polysaccharide
Treats: Dry skin, aging skin, low natural hyaluronic acid production, wounds
Mechanisms: Humectant, moisturizer, injectable filler, biosynthesis stimulant
Retail formulation: 0.01–2% in lotions and serums
Sources: Natural product extraction, microbial fermentation
Michelle’s take: Naturally, in the body, hyaluronic acid is in the extracellular matrix, where it holds onto large amounts of water for lubrication and shock absorption. In skin care, hyaluronic acid is used as a moisturizer; it holds on to water and slows it from evaporating from the skin. It also seems to have a signaling function to cause long-term changes in skin.

As hyaluronic acid is in the news this week (thanks ski jumping) here's a quick reminder about what it is from a recent @cenmag.bsky.social story.

I do keep being shocked that his opening bids are already a far compromise from what the caucus should want. Like on ICE, where "stop doing this entirely elective domestic war action" wasnt even on the table.
