Heads up. Remember the supply chain issues during Covid that led to empty shelves? It is going to be that way for the USA in two weeks. My sister who works for a major US company with products in many big box stores is telling me that they are just about out of product. Time to stock up!
I'm meeting friends tomorrow at a local coffee shop to write our elected reps and vent. I've been doing this once a month. It has been a great way to stay connected with loved ones while putting pressure on politicians. Political activism doesn't need to be boring or painful. Go have fun with it!
The issue is that our drivers' licenses don't explicitly state that we are citizens so those can't be used, and the contents of birth certificates vary state to state so many don't meet the bill requirements. It is not good.
You are an idiot. Read the fucking bill. Our driver licenses don't meet the requirements, they won't accept marriage licenses, and many of our birth certificates also don't meet the requirements laid out in the bill. Grow the fuck up and do the damn research.

If you have a birth certificate with your current name on it and can match it to another ID, you are fine. It will be a big issue for those who have changed their names since birth.

This is voter suppression and sets up a poll tax for women whose only option for ID is a passport now. And what if your passport is delayed? Or rejected because you are not white? Both has already happened under this administration.
Because the president is impatient about getting voting results faster, all mail in ballots must be COUNTED by the end of the election day. This greatly shortens the mail-in ballot window.
Millions are expect to be blocked from voting at midterms or not having their ballots count.
People will need to turn up in person at voting locations with their papers to vote, which puts an undue burden on the sick, disabled, and elderly, especially in rural areas. Travel can be difficult, as is standing in long polling lines, but they are also cutting many mail-in ballot features.
REAL IDS in many states do not show proof of American citizenship and cannot be used. Marriage certificates can't be used. Many birth certificates do not meet the strict requirements due to no standardization of information across states. Passports are the only option, but they take time & money.
There was an ammendment proposal to safeguard married women's voting rights whose current last names no longer reflects the name on their birth certificates.
The GOP voted it down.
The bill is inherently sexist, ablist, and classist. The requirements drastically cut Americans' ability to vote.
The SAVE Act just passed the house. This is a dark day for voting rights, especially for married women, the poor, and deployed families abroad. A passport here STARTS at $160, and with DOGE cutting so many services, many wouldn't get their passports in time for the November election. By design.
