Another post is now up on my 'International legal craft' Substack - this time thinking, perhaps circuitously, about circles and cycles in international legal thought:

My editorial @ljil-leiden.bsky.social just out today. I ask whether a life beyond #interpretation is possible for international lawyers, and offer #composition to think about the process of intl law's unfolding, and the experience of those engaging with it.

Another Substack post - The academic (in)humanities

A really excellent editorial reflecting on IL's contemporary moment: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
Some reflections on my experiences of #AI in academia (tl,dr: too apolitical, too a-humanities). Hopefully of interest to anyone as ambivalent about tech zealotry as me.

The latest international legal craft Substack is up!
This week, I'm thinking about scholarly canons, floorplans and Hannah Arendt. Check it out/subscribe here: intlegalcraft.substack.com/p/the-houses...
My latest Substack post on the 'academic artisan'

The fact that this intro post alone has 100 reads already tells me there might be something to this... Thanks to everyone who's subscribed so far!
If it helps, you can remove the ai-generated summary by adding -ai at the end of any google search. I'm not sure it differs environmentally since it might just be that the user no longer sees it but it's still being generated, but also nice not to have automated garbage shoved in your face...
Why, you ask? The constraints of academic writing, the publishing racket, and for a different - better? - scholarly community: intlegalcraft.substack.com/p/a-substack...
After some humming and hahing, I set up a Substack. Will be writing about intl law, the field, writing, teaching, the university, and more. Subscribe/share if you're interested (or, as I still am, mildly amused): substack.com/@intlegalcra...
I had the pleasure to review The Justice Factory: Management practices at the ICC (academic.oup.com/ia/article-a...) for IA (@iajournal.bsky.social). Richard βͺClements' (@riclements.bsky.socialβ¬) pathbreaking book is a must read for those interested in the ICC and global governance more generally .
One way to understand the nature of legal work is to ask how the jurist becomes oriented towards their materials. What draws us in or excites us, what leaves us unmoved or repels us - (1/n)
A nice overview from editors Negar Mansouri and @drqv.bsky.social on this excellent volume on alternative approaches to international institutional law: cambridgeblog.org/2025/06/inte...
Forgive me, but if your "industry" depends entirely on stealing someone else's work, it deserves to die.

Wonderful - good luck with the writing up/presenting in the meantime!
Would love to read the paper if you are willing to share - currently thinking about legal interpretation as composition (drawing on Cover, Manderson and others).
In a short piece I wrote for @ejiltalk.bsky.social, I ask how the finalised #PandemicAgreement innovates the existing #globalhealth infrastructure, and how it reflects/adjusts relations between global north/south states in seeking to tackle pandemics equitably.

Thanks!
Todays big international law news, that seems to be buried in the back pages. This pandemic treaty now needs to be adopted at the World Health Assembky in May.
