AI: Does not compute Building fossil-fuel infrastructure to power data centers is a poor bet. Renewables are by far the cheaper, faster choice.

AI’s data-center boom is driving a $400B rush to build new gas plants. Data centers use ~1.5% of global electricity, and solar, wind, and batteries already dominate new capacity because they’re cheaper, faster, and less risky. ☀️💨🔋🔌💡

Ma Jun: ‘No business interest’ in Chinese coal power due to cheaper renewables  - Carbon Brief Ma Jun, one of China’s most recognisable environmental activists, tells Carbon Brief that more needs to be done to encourage “multi-stakeholder” participation in climate efforts

“There’s no business interest for the coal sector to carry on, because increasingly the market will trend towards using renewables, because it’s getting cheaper and cheaper”

There is no verified evidence that popular generative AI tools like Gemini or Copilot are delivering “material, verifiable, and substantial” emissions reductions — despite repeated industry claims that AI can help fight climate change.
