Mass protest for housing on April 18 Morning Star10 Mar 2026By Ceren Sagir Social affairs reporter cerensagir@peoples-press.com MORE than 50 trade unions, tenantsβ groups and politicians have backed the National Housing Demonstration in central London, demanding urgent rent controls and a new generation of accessible council homes. Thousands of tenants from across England and Wales are expected to take to the streets on Saturday April 18, in protest at the governmentβs βrefusal to tackle runaway rents.β Major unions, including the NEU, PCS and FBU, are joining forces with the Green Party, London Renters Union, Greater Manchester Tenants Union, Generation Rent and dozens of grassroots campaigns. Asking rents for private tenants have risen by 44 per cent since the pandemic, while social rents and service charges continue to climb, campaigners warn. About one in three renters now struggles to afford essentials like food and heating, and 330,000 households are currently facing homelessness.

Rather than spending billions of pounds on new nuclear weapons that threaten us all while making us poorer, the government should be investing more in necessary services like housing and healthcare!

The morally bankrupt Trump administration has partnered with another morally bankrupt authoritarian to declare an unprovoked war on Iran, already killing scores of civilians.
We need an immediate vote from Congress on a War Powers Resolution. Then articles of impeachment.
The new generation in Iran, that did not see American atrocities in Iran before, now understand why their parents were anti-American

Our campaign for justice does not end when the hearings finish.
What matters next is implementation, turning the Inquiryβs recommendations into changes that save lives in the future.

For bereaved families, this has been years in the making.
We began calling for an Inquiry back in 2020, and the first public hearings started back in June 2023.
This is the last time the inquiry will hear from those who lost the most to Covid.

On Monday, the final public hearings of the Covid-19 Inquiry begin.
Module 10 will examine the impact of the pandemic on society, including bereavement and bereavement support, mental health, and wider experiences across communities.

NEW: Cabinet Secretary, Chris Wormald has resigned.
Time for him to reflect on his contribution to pandemic failures as made clear by the covid inquiry.

We welcome the news that Chris Wormald has resigned.
When he was appointed Cabinet Secretary, we warned ministers that many would see it as his failures during the pandemic being brushed aside, or even rewarded.
Those concerns were ignored.

Following reports that Cabinet Secretary Chris Wormald may be the next to go, we say this canβt come too soon given his role in pandemic failures & appalling evidence to the covid inquiry ππ»

Canβt come too soon given his role in pandemic failures. Amongst other things, covid inquiry concluded he failed to correct assurances that Govt was adequately prepared.
Letβs put an end to failing upwards.

Bereaved families watched him give evidence to the Inquiry and heard repeated denials and a refusal to accept responsibility for what went wrong.
It is unacceptable that, rather than being dismissed long ago for his critical failures during the pandemic, he was promoted.
