Telegraph revenue and profit flat in 2024 amid ongoing ownership limbo
Telegraph spends more than £30m on still-unfinished takeover process in two years.
Most recent results had revenue up 1.2% to £279.4m. It’s also still profitable with 20% margin. Subscriptions grew 5% to eclipse 1m.

The business is in fine shape but I’d agree there are long-term concerns about its subscription model.

I'd say moving to the UK totally killed my interest in the NBA, but honestly between the reality-TVification of the league, Giannis' Kalshi investment, the complete abandonment of the mid-range, and the annual tankathon/"load management", I don't think I'd be watching much anyway.

The main reason no one wanted to wear smart glasses for years was because they didn't look cool enough to wear as a fashion accessory.
So Meta partners with Ray Ban to make them look cool, but in doing so made them blend in like the spy tool they are. Oopsie!

Trump is so cheap he can't even afford to pay for original propaganda. His White House instead resorts to infringing upon copyright to create this offensive, postmodern muck.

Axel Springer's German portfolio runs the gammut from Sun-like tabloid Bild to right-wing Die Welt, which was happy to publish a pro-AfD op-ed from Musk in 2024.
Politico has done some decent reporting but their chief WH correspondent Dasha Burns has a penchant for very pro-Trump framing.

‘I’m all for climate change’: Axel Springer CEO faces heat over leaked messages
Mathias Döpfner’s reported comments on climate, Muslims and east Germany – and his apparent political manoeuvring – create shock waves
It's almost certainty a superior outcome from a competition standpoint and likely in terms of keeping The Telegraph from going further down the far-right rabbit hole, but Mathias Döpfner is a billionaire and is quite right wing.

The "is this true?" question is laziness combined with distrust. They don't want to actually read the article, they just want a tl;dr version and to check if other reporting has backed it up.
The positive take on that is there are other ways to service that demand (digests, short-form video, etc.)

CONFIRMED: This deal will see the Telegraph owned by the German media giant that has come up with a blockbuster £575 million deal in cash.
Far fewer regulatory barriers with this deal.
But Lord Rothermere's dream of owning the Telegraph has been thwarted again...

ICE detains reporter Estefany Rodríguez in Nashville - Nashville Banner
Reporter Estefany Rodríguez, detained by ICE with no arrest warrant, may face deportation. Her attorneys seek immediate review of the legality of her case.
ICE has arrested and detained a Nashville journalist who reported stories critical of ICE. She’s married to a U.S. citizen and has been seeking asylum here after fleeing death threats in Colombia because of her journalism there.
They’ve already sent her to Louisiana.

I appreciate that World Book Day is celebrated in the UK today to avoid the Easter holidays, but if everyone else celebrates World Book Day on April 23, then is it really *World* Book Day?
It's a bit like calling the American baseball championship the World Series ah shit.

Screenshot of an X post by Senator Tom Cotton saying Iran has been an imminent threat to the United States for 47 years and that the president was right to act. Below is a Fox News segment with Cotton speaking while footage labeled “U.S. Central Command – Unclassified” shows a strike.
“Imminent.” You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

The fact these prediction markets remain unregulated is extremely dangerous, will undermine trust in every facet of society they touch, and will make outrageous events more likely to happen simply because inside traders will be incentivized to act in certain ways.

This was taken down, and for obvious reason.
The reality is, the simple ability to bet on something like a nuclear attack occurring in and of itself makes it more likely that such an event will actually happen. Because insiders could bet on it and make a killing (no pun intended).

This is so obviously a bad faith, bullshit argument that I can’t believe we’re being forced to debate it.
It is obviously gambling. The fact it isn’t de facto classified as such as a matter of legal policy is insane.

Bari Weiss reposing a CBS News stories that says the current war with Iran stretches back to 1979
Story at the The Free Press: Our 50 Year War with Iran
Bari Weiss is pushing the “50 year war” narrative at both the Free Press and CBS. The erases both American culpability for the current war (since Iran started in 1979!) and the reasons why a theocratic anti-American regime took power in the first place.

I think one of the things that bothers me the most about the way Polymarket presents itself to the world is that it's adopted the language of journalism to make itself sound more legitimate. Like look at this post from yesterday morning incorrectly "projecting" the winner.

The framing that Democrats are the party of secularism and Republicans the party of faith is hugely problematic.
Yes, Democrats dominate among atheists, agnostics, etc. But the party also does very well among Black Protestants, Jews, and Muslims, with Catholics fairly split.
